The summer before your first semester in college is a demanding time. You’re nervous to move to a new city, maybe even a new state. You’re ecstatic about the next step in your adult life, but terrified about being truly alone for the first time. Throughout this emotional whirlwind, don’t forget about the one person who was always on your side since day one: your sister. Cherish her for the months before college because here are 15 things that you’ll miss once you move away.
1. You used to have a surefire partner on trips, but now you have to make your own friends.
Your sister was always there to help you make a blanket fort out of the backseat of the van during those obligatory family trips. Now you have to do that yourself. Plus if you forgot to bring toothpaste, she’d always share.
2. You always had someone to curl the back of your hair for you.
3. She was your spellchecker.
“Is surprise spelled with an ‘R’?” “What’s the plural of syllabus?” No matter what the question was, she always knew. What are you supposed to turn to in college — the dictionary?
4. Social events never made you nervous since you knew you always had someone to avoid small talk with.
5. You had an entire second closet to raid in times of fashion crisis.
6. There was always ice cream in the freezer that you didn't buy.
One of the best perks of sisterhood is the ice cream that comes along with it. You could always count on her to have her favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream hidden somewhere in the freezer.
7. You always had a partner for the nights you wanted to stay in and binge watch "Gilmore Girls."
8. You could tell her anything with no judgment.
The secrets told within the confines of the bunk bed you shared as kids were never judged. She would laugh and cry with you when appropriate, and she could always be counted on to go turn off the hallway light when you pretended to be asleep.
9. There were always surprise leftovers in the fridge from her dates/hangouts with other people.
10. She was there to remind you when Mother’s Day and Father’s Day were.
Whenever you saw her frantically writing a card at the kitchen table, you knew you’d forgotten an important holiday.
11. She was always there for major life events, like that time you got your first tattoo without Mom’s permission.
12. There was someone to try weird dishes from Pinterest with.
(And then go pick up a pizza with when that dish turned out to be disgusting.)
13. There was someone else to blame when you forgot to clean the bathroom before company arrived.
14. You could use her as an excuse to leave your boring date.
“Hey, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to cut out early. I have to feed my sister.”
15. Simply put, there was always someone there looking out for you.
It will be different now when you come home for winter break the first time, but she’ll always be your first best friend.
