Growing up in Iowa is easily one of the best things that have ever happened to me. Although many people that I know "can't wait to leave this state", I always find reasons to come back home when I am away. Let's face it, sure there aren't nearly as many things to do in Iowa as there are in states such as California, Florida, or New York, but I wouldn't trade the countless memories of swimming in random creeks, going too fast down level B roads, or walking aimlessly around Jordan Creek mall for anything.

1. No, we are not Ohio, Idaho, or Illinois.

"Oh, I love Iowas potatoes!"

2. We are more than just cornfields.

We're also known for soybeans, pigs, eggs, sweltering summers, and frigid winters!

3. RAGBRAI is a BIG deal.

RAGBRAI stands for Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa and contains 8,500 riders that are selected randomly. Since these riders often go through many small towns, it's pretty common to see Iowans gathering to cheer on the riders with water stops and discounted (or sometimes free) food.

4. The weather is completely unpredictable.

"Should I pack an umbrella? There are no clouds in the sky..."

*Rains excessively*

5. There is always a debate on which university is better.

Which school is better? University of Iowa, Iowa State University, or the University of Northern Iowa?

6. RAYGUN satisfies all of your snarky tee shirt needs.

*Refer back to number 1*

7.We have the best state fair in the nation.

Talent shows, animals everywhere, free concerts, deep-fried food... What isn't there to love?

8. Someone will almost always stop to help you if you are stuck on the side of the road.

When it comes to helping each other out, Iowa is basically a smaller version of Canada.

9. The Downtown Farmers Market has so much more to offer than fruits and veggies.

Iowa grown food is delicious but the Downtown Farmers Market is truly spectacular due to the large amounts of entertainment provided, which includes live music and local artists.

10. Gravel can take you pretty much anywhere.

Yes, this is a real map of all of the marked gravel roads in Iowa.

11. There is a Hy-Vee in basically every town.

Who can really complain about Hy-Vee though when HyChi is hands down the best Chinese food to walk man-kind. Oh, and cheaper gas. Thanks, Hy-Vee!\

12. Local corn is some of the best you will ever eat.

Maybe I am biased, but the best corn I've ever tasted is sold just down the road.

13. Mushroom hunting can actually be a paying job.

If you get your timing and location just right you could sell these babies on a curb with your corn stand pictured above.

14. Iowa has some beautiful sights for those who aren't too big on big cities.

Since most of Iowa is rural, it is incredibly easy to find places to relax by cozying up with a good book or going fishing.

15. Iowa is home.

Sure, Iowa may not be the most interesting state or one that brings in many visitors, but Iowa will always be home, no matter how far you travel or how long you're away. Growing up in Iowa has taught me to be humble, kind, patient, and courteous to others. If it wasn't for Iowa, I wouldn't have all these Iowan traits that I carry, including pride when I say that there is no place like home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
