Dancers turn out better, literally.
1. You do not listen to music the same way your friends do
You hear all the one-e-and-ah’s, the bass in the back, the boom, boom, claps: basically you hear it all. And not only do you hear it all, you think of choreography that would perfectly complement the beats no matter what.
2. Your friends and family are always asking you to show them a move.
However, what they don’t understand is that you can’t show a move. Moves are all apart of the greater picture, choreography. And let’s face it, you don’t really feel like showing them your entire dance piece/set at your family and friend gatherings
3. Your spot in class... is YOUR spot.
...and the minute someone tries snatching it mid-class, it secretly kills you inside. You have some obligation to your spot, and if you are removed you may just feel like you can’t dance properly.
4. Sometimes you feel guilty you don’t go to the gym
… Because you would happily choose going to the studio over the gym any day. Moreover, you don’t understand how people actually enjoy going to the gym as their form of exercise. Dance is enjoyable, plus you’re getting a workout, sometimes without even realizing it.
5. It’s totally normal to see one of your friends, former classmates/teachers on the TV
From So You Think You Can Dance, to ABDC, and award shows, you are constantly seeing familiar faces on the big screen…. and honestly, you kind of feel like a proud mom.
6. “I can’t, I have dance” is actually a very, very, prevalent saying in your life.
To all the missed birthday dinners, day trips, and parties you’ve missed. You realize that you have missed out on a lot, however that inexplicable feeling and rush you get from performing on stage, makes all the long nights practicing and missed hangouts worth it.
7. Sometimes, you get more excited shopping at convention booths than going to the mall.
The amount of money you have spent on workshop t-shirts, sweats, and memorabilia is insanely outrageous…While $40 for a cotton t-shirt may sound absurd, you’ve admittedly spent it.
8. Admit it, the moment before “select groups” is always a little awkward.
Dun.. Dun.. Dun.. the moment has arrived. Dancers feel as though the number one goal of every class is to make “selects”, while it really should not be your primary objective of the class, everyone is secretly thinking “Was I good enough?” or “Is the teacher filming?”. When the silence hits and the teacher points or does not point at you to go, things can get a little awkward.
9. You dance everywhere, with zero shame
From walks across campus to class, to the grocery store, the minute you hear a beat your body responds naturally. You eventually get over the weird looks you get from others passing by.
10. You’ve changed in the car multiple times to get ready for dance
We dancers, should be quite thankful for tinted windows.
11. When you’re running late for practice: you factor in who’s teaching, how long warm-up will last, and continuously reassure yourself you will make it in time.
Sometimes you are blessed and make it right on time, but most often you end up getting a lecture from your director explaining “tardiness, is not an excuse”.
12. You live for the moment when your audience "ooh's and ahh's" at your performance. Dancers are a breed of humans that understand the concept of feeding off of other peoples energy. When you hear the crowd go crazy for that 8-count you spent an hour mastering and cleaning, you instinctively raise your energy level 10 times higher.
13. Having nice feet is something you can only dream of. So, your feet aren't model material, but you have a killer turn out and insane balance. Sorry to all those that have a foot fetish, you will most likely, never be able to date a dancer.
14. You have more family members than all of your non-dancer friends. This is due to the fact that your dance friends and team often feel like extended family members. At the end of the day these groups of people you share your passion with and spend days and nights rehearsing together, become so close to your heart.
15. The idea of doing any other activity or sport besides dance is ludicrous. Dancing is beautiful, it is one of the only sports (Yes, dance is a sport) that allows for creativity and athleticism to combine and form something unique and intriguing. You never want to stop, and if you do it will not be for long.
