The future has the potential to be incredibly exciting—however it also has the potential to thrust fear upon us. I am one of the people who fears it more than looks forward to it, which is exactly why I am writing this article. I hope that by the end of this, I can convince myself, and others, to relax about it. I also know that there is no way I am the only one going through this so why not talk about it?
I am going to be graduating at the end of this semester and I can’t even express how nervous I am to learn how “to adult.” I mean, I get stressed out when I don’t know plans for tomorrow, let alone the rest of my life. It’s a scary thing not knowing what will and won’t happen someday, and it is difficult for people to cancel out that lurking fear.
For those who fear it, I just want you to know, that it’s perfectly normal to. It’s something a lot of people say “go with the flow” or “just take it a day at a time” to. This, my friends, is much easier said than done. It so simple that we somehow cannot comprehend it. Like, what? I can only take things a day at a time? That’s obscene and obviously cannot be true. However, it’s completely true.
As much as we don’t want to admit that that’s the case, all we can really do is take things a day at a time. So though it’s sometimes painfully tough for control freaks like myself to deal with, we have to try as hard as we can to do so.
If you’re in the same general time period of your life as I am, you should not be panicking about getting married, getting a house and having kids. If you are in your 20's, you are not running out of time. Yes, it is something to look forward to. Yes, it is okay to look forward to that. Yes, it is all over your Facebook feed and all your “friends” seem to be full-blown adults already. But that is what is working for their lives. That is not what yours has to be like, especially not right away.
You have to do things at your own pace and not rush anything. You should do things when you are ready for them. If you’re ready for that stuff, great! But if not, you need to somehow convince yourself that time is not running out, because it’s not. Same thing with careers and every other aspect of your life. If you hit the nail on the head right away and find your dream job, dream significant other, dream anything, that’s amazing. But others have to go through a million different experiences to find their knack and to be content.
The only thing you can control, is right now. What you can do, is do your best every single day no matter what. So even though you can’t change the future with a snap of your fingers right now, you can make it a bright future by doing your best each day.
Yes, it is incredibly cheesy, but it’s not incorrect by any means. Life is full of trials and errors, however, it is full of more amazing things than you may expect. And if you all you do is worry about the future, you will miss those amazing things that are happening right in front of your eyes right now.
So, my fellow future-fearers, start enjoying today instead of freaking out about weeks, months, even years from now. Every day makes a difference and since today is all we have and all we can actually do anything about, we should enjoy it. Instead of spending the whole day worrying about tomorrow, embrace today.
