15 Subtle Things Everyone Loves About Vacation
Ashley Heiderstadt

Vacation is something everyone needs once in a blue moon. No matter where you are or who you're with, it's probably much needed. It doesn't have to be a glamorous Caribbean Island or somewhere in South America or Mexico for you to enjoy it, but most things listed require some time in the sun and a hotel.

1. The smell of a fresh hotel room.

You all know what I'm talking about: when you first walk into the clean hotel room after a day of whatever you were doing. The scent is so clean and you just can't put your finger on the exact cleaner they use. It's like hotels mix up their own concoction of cleaners and it makes this wonderful distinct cleaned hotel room smell.

2. That shower after a long day in the sun.

Showering after you've been at the beach or at the water park with layers upon layers of sun tan lotion and finally lathering up on the soap: its almost like you're a new person. Although showering after a long day is great, getting out is even better. Once you get out, you feel so refreshed and cool.

3. The mini shampoos and conditioners.

Now I'm not commending stealing here, but taking a million of those mini shampoos and conditioners doesn't count. It's like a free souvenir for everywhere you go. They always smell so amazing and they give you more every time they clean your room.

4. The complimentary breakfast.

Although it's not a gourmet breakfast, sometimes you just love a greasy piece of bacon and a fluffy, warm waffle with an uber amount of syrup on it. There's always so many options and it's like it tastes better because it's free. Don't forget to take a few snacks from there, no matter if you're driving back home or going to the beach or the theme park.

5. Not having to clean or cook.

Did someone ever say to you that "there's no maid service in this house"? Well now you can actually say "yes there is". You don't have to make your bed or clean the bathroom because someone is going to do that for you.

6. The locusts at night.

Walking outside during the humid nights for a stroll and hearing the locusts is one of my favorite things. Sometimes you can hear the ocean or a fountain or water fall in the distance and that feeling makes me feel so at peace. It can be the middle of the winter, but you're on vacation and you're not even keeping track of what day of the week it is.

7. Sleeping in.

Sleeping- in is a rare thing in this day and age and not having any responsibilities, classes, work or anything in between is just the best feeling.

8. Eating anything you want.

There is no such thing as a diet when you're on vacation. You're constantly snacking and when you're not snacking, you're eating a full course meal. Don't even dare get a salad for your appetizer, you know you want those jalapeno poppers.

9. The smell of the air.

The air just smells so different when you're on vacation. It could smell like salt water, flowers, or just better air. Sometimes the smells could be unpleasant, but it's always going to be something that you'll remember about the place.

10. Disconnecting from social media/ having an excuse to post multiple times

There are the people that constantly post about their vacation- what they're doing, who they're with and then there are people who wait until they get home to post. There is no in between.

11. The theme of your hotel room.

If you're staying somewhere specific to your vacation like by a beach or in a theme park, the rooms are themed. Once you see the design, you wish your bedroom at home looked like that.

12. There are people there to accommodate your every wish.

Hotel employees cannot seem to do enough for you. They're always making sure you're comfortable and relaxed and if you need something, they are more than happy to oblige.

13. The sun seems to set later.

Did you ever notice that the sun seems to set at about 8:00 wherever you go on vacation? Those longer days make your vacation seen longer and if that doesn't make someone happy, I'm not sure what will.

14. Wearing your new clothes you specifically got for vacation.

You don't usually wear a big floppy hat when you're going out and about at home, but it just seems like the normal thing to do on vacation. With a floppy hat and some over-sized sunglasses, you feel just like a movie star lounging around at the pool or the beach.

15. Going Home

Even though vacations are much needed sometimes, paradise doesn't last forever. There is nothing like going home and sleeping in your own bed; eating homemade food and getting back on that treadmill.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
