12 Struggles TCNJ Students Know All Too Well

1. Terrible Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi is probably one of the most frustrating issues that almost every TCNJ student has to deal wiith. TCNJ-DOT1X not working? No surprise there! Just kill some time Facebook stalking on your phone until you get some sort of connection. Oh wait, you live in the towers or townhouses? GOOD LUCK. Time to break out the Ethernet cord.

2. Finding decent equipment at the PEC.

You think the WiFi doesn’t work? Try finding a working treadmill at the physical enhancement center (PEC). There have been multiple times where I’ve seen seven of the eight treadmills out of order. Want to work out around dinnertime? Good luck finding an open piece of equipment, let alone one that works.

3. Broken elevators.

Treadmills aren’t the only things that break on campus. If you haven’t been stuck in an elevator, or had to walk up to your room on Travers 10, or had to walk up at least one flight of stairs in any given building because the elevators were broken-- you haven’t had the real TCNJ experience. Also, consider yourself very lucky.

4. The line at the Lib café.

It’s 10:50 and you want meal equiv? Well you better haul ass over to the lib café because the line is probably already stretched out the doors of the library. And if you wait until class is over at 12:20, there’s a good chance it’ll be just as bad. But if you decide to wait on that never ending line, that skinny caramel macchiato will be worth it!

5. The lines in Eick at 5 p.m.

You might have a three hour or longer night class that starts at 5:30, in which case you will probably want to eat beforehand. Trying to eat at Eick around five is near impossible; it seems as if every single person on campus is trying to eat at that time. Not fun.

6. When Eve or Big Larry aren’t working.

These Eick lines are somewhat bearable if Big Larry greets you with “hello mah sista!” or Eve reminds you: “we almost made it!” Without them, your day just isn’t nearly as pleasant.

7. When someone sets the alarm off in Eick.

There’s always going to be that person that decides to beat the 5 p.m. lines and toast a bagel and run…but burn the bagel…and set off the alarms…and then everyone has to leave. Now half of campus is miserable because they didn’t have time to eat before a three hour class. THANKS.

8. Fire drills at 4 a.m.

Fire drills are great, but the ones between 2 and 4 a.m. are even better!!! They usually happen just as you’re finally getting to sleep after hours of studying, or when you’re in the middle of shampooing your hair in the shower. Either way, you’re forced to walk outside no matter the weather condition or whether or not you're decent. Shout out to the person who microwaved Easy Mac without water…

9. When it’s 2 a.m. and finding food is impossible.

Eick has long been closed, you just missed T-Dubbs and the rest of the world is pretty much asleep. Finding food at this time is as much of a nightmare as all the work you have to do.

10. The Lib during midterms/finals.

Unless you enjoy sleeping in the library, just find somewhere else to study. Trying to find a place to do work/study will make you more miserable during these stressful times of the semester. Empty classrooms are great places to go when the library is packed.

11. Trying to find a parking spot if you’re a commuter.

If you live off campus or commute and you don’t get to campus before 11 a.m, you know finding a spot to park is going to be as hard as finding an adequate treadmill in the gym.

12. Name recognition (my personal favorite).

“Where do you go to school?” “TCNJ” “Oh, you mean Rutgers?” NO. I do not mean Rutgers. I go to the college that far surpasses any college you might confuse us with. TCNJ students have a lot of pride for their school -- and they won't let you forget it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
