Coming from Sacramento, I have found that a lot of my peers couldn’t wait to move out of the city and on to something “bigger and better.” But after spending a few years outside of Sac, I’ve realized that it is probably one of the best places to grow up.
Sacramento isn’t just a great place to live; it’s a community that many can identify with. And any Sacramentan will be able to recognize a few key characteristics of being raised in Sac.
Here are 15 things that will remind you of home.
1. You’ve been to Sutter’s Fort and had to dress up for the era on a field trip with your elementary school.
2. You’ve ran/walked the Run to Feed the Hungry on Thanksgiving Day at least once.
3. You’re aware of the competition between Leatherby’s, Gunther’s and Vic’s, and you have a favorite.
4. You’ll always be a die-hard Kings fan, no matter how good or bad they do during the season.
5. The only times you’ve ever gone to Old Town are when you’ve had friends or family visiting from a place that isn’t Sacramento.
6. You used to love going to Fairytale Town as a child.
7. You’ve been to the “Fab 40s” during the holiday season to look at all of the beautiful lights and decorations.
8. You have always wondered when the mall in Elk Grove is finally going to be finished.
9. You know all the best spots at the river to hang out at during the summer.
10. You cringe whenever you hear people say “Sac-Town.”
11. You always begged your parents to take you and your friends to Golfland SunSplash during the summer.
12. You never understood why it is called the “City of Trees,” until you left and realized that most places don’t have the copious amounts of trees that Sacramento does.
13. You get upset every time you see pictures of Folsom Lake during the drought, because you remember going there during the summer as a child and seeing it filled to the brim with water. Remember this?
14. You know that going to the Roseville Galleria is always a better choice, but sometimes you just want to wear sweatpants to the mall and not be judged —so you go to Arden.
15. You can never leave the house without seeing someone you know. Sacramento may seem big at times, but for some odd reason, everyone knows everyone.
Whether we want to admit it or not, our hometowns shape us and will always hold a special place in our hearts. As teenagers, many of us were always looking for an ample opportunity to get out of the city. And sometimes Sacramento doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. The city is a great place to raise kids because of its tight-knit community, and for that I will always be grateful.
