Babysitting is something that we, as college kids, find to be one of the most popular jobs around. A lot of us develop ourselves with babysitting like it is an art form, quickly gaining quite a bit of clientele, and grow to love each one of the children we take care of. We learn about their personalities, as well as what makes them laugh, and what movies they have memorized. We learn the art of improvising flawlessly, and develop levels of creativity you didn't even know existed. Some days the kids can be perfect well behaved angels, and then others they can drive you completely crazy. But no matter what, we love our jobs. Here are fifteen confessions that babysitters all over can attest to.
1. Don't Be Surprised When You Discover What Your Child Eats
Most of the time we are immune to the excuses that kids give for what they can eat at mealtimes, but sometimes when kids refuse to eat breakfast or dinner we get creative. With this being said, don't be surprised if you find that your child has eaten a popsicle and a handful of goldfish in the time you have been gone.
2. If It's early morning, most of us literally rolled out of bed and came to your house
As college students, and depending on the time of year, chances are that the night before, we were either up late studying or doing homework, hanging out with friends, or binge-watching netflix until all hours of the night. Most of us probably brushed our teeth, threw on some clothes that we assumed were clean on our bedroom floor, and if your lucky we ran a brush through our hair.
3. As Much As We Love Our Jobs, We Count The Minutes Until You Get Home
Sometimes after we've played one too many games of hide and seek, and hair salon, and watched five thousand episodes of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, we find ourselves, normally the middle of nap time, counting the minutes until your home. We love the time we get to spend with your kids, but we do enjoy the freedom that we have after we leave your house. With this in mind, we pride you parents for how much energy you parents have.
4. We Will Take Advantage Of Your Fully Stocked Pantry and Your Netflix Account
If your a babysitter and your reading this, you know what we're talking about. You've just given the kids baths, read the bedtime stories, or created one in your head, given the cups of water, and finally everyone is asleep. Inevitably you are going to now stuff your face with whatever you can find in the pantry. Parents, us college kids greatly appreciate your fully stocked pantries, and chances are will take full advantage of it. In addition to stocked pantries, we lBonus points for junk food and soda! As well as fully stocked pantries, we find that after the kids go to sleep is the perfect time to get back to where we were in our last netflix binge.
5. Naps Happen Anywhere
With all of the fun they have with us, sometimes we find that naps can happen anywhere your child happens to be. Most of the time, we have exhausted all forms of entertainment, so it is quite normal for your child to take a nap wherever they happen to fall asleep, (i.e the middle of the living room floor, or in our laps in the recliner).
6. Going To The Bathroom Alone Is A Luxury
Sometimes they just want to see what your doing, sometimes there's monsters in the living room. Whatever the reason happens to be, we often find that the longer you take care of kids, the more they feel the need to be with you. Even when you use the bathroom. So we often find ourselves using the bathroom with a single or multiple friends joining us in the restroom. Everything's more fun when your together, right?
7. We Feel Really Awesome When We Can Sing The Theme Song to Their Favorite Show
Whether it's Sesame Street, Sofia The First, or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, we get really big satisfaction out of knowing all of the words to the theme song of their favorite shows. Maybe it's because we are trying to figure out if it's an episode of the show that we haven't seen, although we've more then likely seen them all, or because we've been sitting in the same spot with a sleeping two year old in our laps for the last two hours. We get a lot of satisfaction out of being able to belt out all of the words. "Come inside it's fun inside!"
9. With this, we try and Figure Out The Voices Of The Characters In These Shows

"Wait, is that Dr. Torres from Grey's Anatomy?" "That voice is definitely Drew Barrymore." We've all done it. Once you are exposed to five thousand episodes of the same show, it makes you wonder who is behind all of the voices of the characters in their favorite TV shows. Often times, we don't even realize we're doing it until we're accidentally telling your four year old that the queen is the same voice as our favorite character from an old movie that was made fifteen years before they were even born.
10. When a baby is crying, creativity Is Key
When you've been caring for a screaming baby for awhile, our levels of creativity for what can soothe a baby increases. From opening all the blinds, to standing in the doorway. We may even result to pulling out our phones and seeing if your child has good taste in music. Once all is said and done, the calming and successful feeling of putting a sleeping baby in their crib is something that cannot be described.
11. Sometimes We Nap When The Kids Nap
Just like you parents, when the kids are especially crazy or we accidentally gave them two cookies instead of one at lunch, we are living for nap time or bedtime. More then likely, we will find ourselves falling asleep on the couch and taking a really incredible nap when your kids are sleeping. Don't Worry! Us babysitters have the ability to jump up from this really amazing sleep and be at your kids beck and call. We also discover that the rest of the day is better when we have all had a nap. Sleep is definitely not for the weak.
12. We Give In to "What Mommy Does"
"I promise mommy lets me eat two zebra cakes instead of one." "Mommy lets me watch TV for four hours." We hear it all. Sometimes we give into what your kids say, or more then likely you do not say. In order to maintain our sanity and keep your kids happy, we give into what they tell us. After all, "mommy always lets us eat five cookies and two pudding cups in one hour because it builds strong muscles."
13. Bargaining Is A Very Real Thing
"If you clean up your room you can have a piece of candy." "If you play nice with your sister when we go outside you can have fifteen minutes on your tablet." When we are spending most of our days with small children, we learn that in some cases, bargaining is sometimes the most efficient way to get tasks done. If you promise to wait twenty minutes before nap time, or five skittles in exchange for picking up the tower of blocks in the living room, you would be surprised how quickly tasks get completed.
14. We bend your instructions
You leave thorough instructions for us to get your baby to sleep in a crib whenever they fall asleep, or to not allow your ten year old to play Xbox for more then an hour at time. When we work so hard to get your sixth month to fall asleep and it happens when we are sitting in the recliner, or when it takes two hours to get your kid to pull himself away from the Xbox, chances are the baby is going to be sleeping on us, and your kid got to enjoy an extra hour of video games.
15. We Will Love Your Kids Like They Are Our Own
Your kids love us and we love them. We learn their quirks, what their favorite animal is, and their favorite foods. We learn the names of their stuffed toys, and which blankets are their favorites. We learn how to make them laugh and giggle hysterically. As your babysitter, we will do our best to give your kids the best care and entertainment they deserve.
