15 Reasons to Be In A Sorority

People often look at sororities and have a very bad opinion of them. There are stereotypes of what a ‘sorority girl’ is and how she acts. Though until you are actually a part of it, you don’t really understand what it’s all about. I know that sounds very cheesy but it’s true. I used to think that I would never go through formal recruitment. I had many conversations about it with my mother and with one of my good friends who is in a sorority. My friend told me that it is so fun and you get to meet tons of girls. SO here is a list of reasons why being a sorority is actually more fun than you would think.

1. You get to have INSTANT friends

When you first meet your pledge sisters on Bid Day, you will have already gone through some of the stages of recruitment with them. Friendships will be formed quickly because you all have one thing in common. Your sorority.

2. You will always have someone to go to the Café with, no one likes to eat alone

Seriously. Eating alone often makes you feel weird like you have no friends. You will most likely have a giant Groupme with all of your pledge sisters in it, all you gotta do it hit it up for a lunch buddu.

3. There will always be someone to do quick runs to Wal-Mart and Target with

Wal Mart just got a little more fun. If that was possible?

4. There is always an overwhelming amount of support

Your sisters aren’t just there when you’re up. They are there when you’re down. When you have surgery and need some help, or you don’t make the grades you wanted. They will be there to lift you up.

5. You are Sisters

You are more than friends. You share a bond. You may not be extremely close with every one of your sisters, but you are sisters none the less. You will respect each other and love each other.

6. You will meet people you would not have met

There will be amazing women doing incredible things, going on trips to foreign countries or helping out right here at home. But you wouldn’t have met there women who are changing the world without being brought together by sisterhood

7. Your sisters get you through EVERYTHING

I feel like this needs to be stressed. Academic struggles. Personal struggles. When you feel like you have no one to lean on, there are 90+ women with shoulders that you can use. Even when you don’t want to open up, they’ll know.

8. VOLUNTEERING. Which you may/may not have done without the required hours

Volunteering is such a gift. Whether it be with animals, children, or the homeless, having this experience, which you may not have had without your sorority is one you will always remember.

9. All your best memories will be with these ladies

Whether it be a run to iHop after Chapter, a Formal, or even just hanging out babysitting at the house, these ladies will hold your most fun and hilarious memories.

10. All the CLOTHES

Just incase you didn’t understand—CLOTHES. Hammy downs. Open closets. CLOTHES.

11. You will find your Girl Squad

You will love your sisters. But you will find your few. That few that will be your rock. You will do everything together. Go to parties, formals, and even coordinate outfits so you can take Squad pics.

12. It will help you grow up and become a better leader

Being in a sorority offers you the chance for leadership roles. It allows you to lead women and help others and also help yourself lean in the process.

13. Friendship.

You will learn the true meaning of the word. Friendship is important along with sisterhood. It will be a test of whether you can be a real friend to someone in their time of need.

14. Love.

You will love your sisters and what you all stand for. You will love your Purpose and the meaning of it to you. But you will also learn to love yourself just as you are.

15. Loyalty.

No explanation needed.

So there. Some fun and serious reasons to join a sorority. There will always be people who criticize what they don’t understand, but if you really want to know just go through recruitment for yourself and find out that way.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
