15 Reasons Why Marianas Trench Is The Greatest Band Ever
Marianas Trench

I came across Marianas Trench a couple years ago, although I don't remember how. It might have been through Pandora or a friend, but that is beside the point. The day that I heard "Fallout" by Marianas Trench was the day that changed my life forever. I had fallen in love with a musical group; hard, head-over-heels in love.

I can say that Marianas Trench is the greatest band ever, but you probably wouldn't believe me. That is why I have constructed 15 reasons why they are truly the best band ever.

1. They are Canadian.

Let me start this off by saying I am proud to be an American. But, Canada is obviously doing something right in the music category. They are able to claim the greatest band of all time. Canada is just better, sorry.

2.Their social media presence is wonderful.

These guys are simply awesome! Their social media is filled with silly pictures, pictures from concerts, giveaways, and random factoids about each member. Mike does a great job maintain their social media; especially their Snapchat.

Check them out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat (mtrenchofficial)! I promise you won't regret it.

3. They sound amazing in concert.

I was blessed to be able to go to a Marianas Trench concert in November of 2015. I think their music is absolutely amazing, but my breath was taken away during their concert. The music pumps through you and you become one with it. I didn't think it was possible, but they sound even better live. Bless their souls.

Here is the beautiful acoustic version of "Who Do You Love".

4. They aren't mainstream.

They are not your typical pop or rock music. Each of their songs is different from the last.

They even wrote a song discussing and even mimicking mainstream pop music. "Pop 101" is about as unique as it gets. With reference to Mumford and Sons, Black Eyed Peas, as well as others, they try to explain how to make pop music and how it is all basically the same thing.

Pop music 101
Some simple instructions
For a good first impression
Now let's start with verse one

A minor chord, tensions grow
Fade in the bass like so
Now with momentum go "stop"
And bring the beat back

You definitely don't want to miss out on their creative pop song that explains how to make modern pop music, "Pop 101".

5. All of their albums are perfection.

All four albums (Astoria, Ever After, Fix Me, and Masterpiece Theatre) are all quite different.

Fix Me, their debut album released in 2006, contains more of their hard rock and pop punk music. Most of the songs on Fix Me are angry, usually about hatred or heartbreak.

Masterpiece Theatre, released in 2010, was created with more pop punk and symphonic rock vibes. There is even orchestral sounds mixed into every song. The songs are very raw with emotion and are even planned out in a specific order on the album. "Masterpiece Theater I", "II", and "III" are all continuations of each other. "Masterpiece Theatre III" contains rhythms, melodies, and concepts from the other tracks. This one is hands down their coolest album.

Ever After, released in 2011, was designed creatively too! Even though they continues their mixture of pop punk and symphonic rock, each sing leads into the next, making the album one long song.

Astoria, released in 2015, is amazing. Its title was inspired from the hometown of the Goonies, Astoria, Oregon. With mixing funk into their usual pop and pop punk, they created a new sound which is probably their best yet.

6. Their music videos are original, yet still make sense.

All of their music videos are completely different. The "Celebrity Status" music video shows them reenacting various commercials, infomercials, and T.V. shows. That makes sense. The "This Means War" video shows a Goonies inspired war with a creative twist; paint splatters, comic book-like transitions, and dance battles, all while taking place on a graffiti-covered street.

I encourage you to check them out. They are all beautiful, powerful, unique, and contain a message.

7. Their lyrics are relatable and beautiful.

Each and every one of their songs has a purpose. Each word beautifully crafted and arranged to tell a story. Between all of their songs, you will feel every emotion under the sun. They are true artists.

8. Their music is eclectic.

Each song sounds different from the last. While they cover almost every genre under the sun, they still have a distinct sound that I will treasure until the day I die.

9. Each member is great.

Josh Ramsey, Ian Casselman, Matt Webb, and Mike Ayley... What a glorious mix of specimen.

They are all dorks in their own special way. Marianas Trench would not be the same if they lost one of them.

10. Josh's voice. Period.

Josh's voice is literally the greatest noise in existence. There are plenty of artists that can sing well. There are plenty of artists that can sing amazing. But NO ONE TOPS JOSH RAMSEY.

Not only is his voice angelic, but it is moving, and powerful.

But, he can even do this...

Still don't believe his voice is the best of the best?

11. Their clothing is super rad.

They are the only four men that I have seen that can pull off tutus, speedos, skinny jeans, 80's garbs, and everything in between. They have even worn cowboy/horse suits...

12. They actually care about their fans.

They don't make music to be popular or be mainstream. I mean, they even made a song just for the misfits of society, "Here's To The Zeros".

They have meet and greets at almost every concert. They share their fans' pictures, art, and statuses. They respond to the fans at concerts. They are just a great group of guys that care about their Trenchers.

13. You can listen to their music no matter what mood you are in.

They have a song to lift you up, mellow you out, make you cry, make you want to scream, and make you dance in the shower. If you need it, they have it. Just put them on repeat and go on with your day.

14. Their songs are not about violence, sex, or drugs like most music nowadays.

Most of their songs are about love, heartbreak, pain, and growth. Unlike most other songs made today, they have a point. They aren't their to promote drinking copious amounts of alcohol, experimenting with drugs, sleeping around, and making bad decisions. It is refreshing and something that other artists need to try.

15. Their sound is original.

I have listened to plenty of music in my 19 years of life and have yet to find anything like Marianas Trench. Nowadays, that is a hard thing to say. Everyone has an artist that inspired their music or a genre that they strictly stick to. Marianas Trench is their own entity.

If you have gone through each point, listened to their music, and still think that they are not the best, you have a couple options:

1. Clean your ears. (There must be something in them).

2. You must re-listen to EVERY song. (You probably missed something).

Still think they are not the best?

1. Admit you are wrong or sacrifice yourself to the music gods.

Sorry, but if you fail to realize their greatness, you do not know what real music and true talent is.

Sincerely,

All Marianas Trenchers

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
