Everyone has different tiered friendships: You've got your in-class friends, school friends you go out with, and also your school BFFs. But if you're lucky, you have a best friend who doesn't go to the same school as you. There are so many wonderful things about being so close to someone who attends a different school from you and here are just a few of the reasons why...
1. You always have someone to vent to.
Whether it's roommate issues, friend drama, or guy problems, your best friend is always there to listen. Since they don't know any of the people you're talking about and probably will never meet them unless you want them to, you know your secret is safe with them.
2. They know your past and thus give the best (unbiased) advice.
They know all about your past and what roads you've already been down before. They always know exactly what advice to give and always have your best interest in mind. Plus they probably don't know who you're talking about, so their opinion will be unbiased.
3. They already know the background story.
There's nothing more annoying than having to summarize several years worth of background information before telling a new story to a new friend, only to have them not even follow what you just spent 20 minutes explaining. Luckily, your best friend already knows it all and in most cases lived through it with you.
4. Visiting them is a huge, exciting event.
Let's face it, you spent weeks planning the trip up to visit them. You talked about it every day and probably even told all your friends at school "I'm going to visit my best friend this weekend!" more than once.
5. Their friends become your friends.
Their friends probably added you on all social media way before you even met them. But once you meet you all become one big happy group of friends (but don't worry, they won't tell your school friends everything they already know about them).
6. You never get sick of being with them.
When you're around the same people constantly, the little things they do can start to get on your nerves. This is never the case with your best friend. All of the time you spend together is time well spent.
7. They know your family.
8. They're a little reminder of home and keep you grounded.
Sometimes everything at school becomes a little too much. You sometimes lose sight of who you are and what you're doing there; you just want a glimpse of normalcy and familiarity: a reminder of home. Whenever I am missing my hometown or feeling homesick I just text my best friend and immediately feel so much better.
9. They're the push you need to get you through a tough exam week.
For most people exam weeks are just long, draining, sleepless weeks, but for you, they're one step closer to going home and seeing your best friend. Just the thought of getting to spend every day together, shopping, eating, and doing all the other things you love is enough to make you push through.
10. You never run out of things to talk about.
Whether it's a "remember when" conversation, telling them about a new guy you just met, or even comparing the weather, you're sure to never run out of things to talk about with your best friend. They don't go to school with you so they don't know what's happening around there and if they have heard rumors about something happening at your school they'll come right to you for all the details.
11. You can make their day by just sending them a letter.
It doesn't even have to be a package. There is nothing like going to collect your mail and realizing your best friend took time out of their day to send you something. It is so thoughtful and will make them so happy. They'll love anything you send them just because it's from YOU.
12. You always have new things to show them.
Pictures are an everyday occurrence in your conversations. Whether it's something you saw around campus that reminded you of them or a screenshot of something you know they'll appreciate on Facebook, you're always eager to show your best friend your findings.
13. You can rest assured your friendship can withstand anything.
If your friendship is strong enough to last not seeing each other for weeks at a time and living far away from each other, rest assured you've found yourself a forever friend. Your friendship isn't strong because it is "easy" but because you both care so much and make it work without a second thought.
14. You begin to appreciate them and their support even more.
When you're away at school the people around you don't have years of experience on how to comfort and support you, when you just need to be loved. You realize just how much you took for granted all those times your best friend showed up at your house with snacks and hugs. I love my friends at school, but sometimes I just feel like saying "Well my best friend would've..."
15. They're irreplaceable and no one will ever compare.
Despite all of the new friends you will make, no one will ever replace your best friend. They are your forever friend, your go-to with everything and your person. Your friendship will last a lifetime and no distance could ever tear your bond apart. They know you best and truly are your other half.
