There are two kinds of mover-outers; the ones that are packed up and ready to leave in an organized fashion a week before their move-out date, and the ones that throw everything in random bags, dirty or clean, and pile it in the car the day of. No matter which type you are (not trying to judge here), these 10 simple life-hacks will ease the pain of packing up your room.
1. Use trash bags to transport wrinkle prone clothes along with their hangers.
This is a life-saver for anyone who hates folding. Plus, it makes unpacking easier because instead of hanging everything up all over again, you can hang the bag in your closet and undo the trash bag! Ta-da! Magic.
2. Use plastic straws to keep your jewelry tangle-free.
Necklaces can take hours to untangle and when you're in a hurry, there's no time to mess around. Cutting straws to the length of your necklaces and stringing them through keeps them tangle-proof and transport-friendly.
3. Put all room decorations in one single box.
Store all of your room decorations in one storage bin. Chances are that when you go to unpack next year, you'll forget how much you had. Having everything together will keep you more organized when you're planning where to put things on your walls next fall.
4. Throw away anything you know you'll never use again.
When in doubt, throw it out. If you don't wear it, toss it or donate it. Do whatever you have to do, but don't haul it home if you know you'll never use it again!
5. Clean out your Keurig!
You'd be surprised how gross Keurig's can get. This link will save your butt. And vinegar is very inexpensive!
6. Pack cords in toilet paper rolls to avoid tangling.
Keep your cords organized and labeled by storing them in toilet paper rolls. This prevents tangling and also frees up more space in storage boxes.
7. Distinguish between suitcases of clothes you'll wear this summer and clothes you'll be putting into storage.
To avoid having to rummage through your boxes as soon as you get home, label what's headed for storage in the basement and what's closet-bound.
8. Put shower caps around your shoes to prevent dirt from spreading.
Dirt-free clothes = less to wash.
9. Save shopping bags to transport items home.
Save your shopping bags, especially cloth bags, throughout the school year. They're great for transporting cosmetics and other products, plus you're recycling in the process.
10. Roll your t-shirts.
Rolling t-shirts actually saves more space than folding and doesn't cause any additional wrinkles.
11. Do not put dirty clothes and clean clothes in the same bag.
Whatever you do, don't do this. Taking the time to split up your dirty and clean laundry into separate containers will save you from having to wash even more when you get home. If you're feeling extra organized, do you laundry before you leave and get a fresh start to summer!
12. Write down the password to your wifi router on a post-it note and stick it to the router.
Writing down your wifi password will help you dodge getting calling the tech guy the first say of classes next fall. Tape it to the router or print out the wifi scan code and reconnect that way.
13. Tear out used notebook pages and throw them out, but keep the rest of the notebook for the following semester.
Recycle used notebooks that have enough paper left for next semester. This saves money and trees.
14. Label everything.
Labeling your storage bins ahead of time will answer the question, "Where's my other sock?" before you have the chance to ask it.
15. Don't pack everything the night before you leave!
Waiting to pack at the last minute causes us to throw everything into the car without thinking first. Using these hacks will help you cut down on time and also give you space to pack a little bit at a time. By move-out day, you'll be organized and ready to go without having to worry about laundry or the stress of clutter.
Happy Summer!
