1. Love is not easy.
We watch Rory Gilmore go through some heart-wrenching relationships- some which overlap a little. Young girls are shown that you may love two people at once, but you can'y have your cake and eat it too without someone getting hurt by the end of it.
2. You can always love someone, but you don't need to have someone to be happy.
Rory ended up saying goodbye to all of her past love interests, turning down a marriage proposal to hit the campaign trail as a journalist. Even though she loved Logan, she knew that she had to focus on her life.
3. You don't always have to look your best.
Even though I can't think of a time where she ever looked anything but cute, Rory shares the feeling that every college student expresses after the first week of freshman year.
4. Books may be the best thing ever.
Deep breath in, deep breath out.
5. No matter how bad the fight, you can always make up.
One of the hardest parts of the series for me was watching Rory and Loralie go through their rough patch. There was nothing as satisfying as seeing them make up.
6. College can be really, really hard.
Every mid-term/finals week, I post this clip from the show because it literally is like watching myself on screen. It was nice being able to say "thank you, Gilmore Girls, for validating that college is not a piece of cake if you're an overachiever."
7. The coffee addiction is real.
As someone who makes around two pots of coffee a day, I can't help but feel the coffee buzz from this show.
8. It's okay to not know what you want to do.
I love that up until almost the last episode of the last season, Rory didn't have a set plan. She didn't have it mapped out, she didn't have it nailed down, she was struggling just like a lot of other students. It's pretty easy to identify with a character who waits until graduation to figure out a life plan.
9. If anyone talks about how much you eat, you don't need them in your life.
If you'll excuse me, I have a box sugar donuts to eat from the take out Chinese place.
11. Some things just have to be accepted.
You're not going to get along with everyone, and some of those people may be your family members. You'll make decisions in your life they won't approve of, or mistakes they'll never let you live down, but don't let that stop you from trying to reestablish any kind of connection. If it doesn't work out, you can at least say you tried.
11. Life sometimes has to involve a little risk.
There was nothing that made me want to live life quite like watching The Life and Death Brigade. These ridiculous staged stunts were meant to show people that sometimes a little risk can put the fun and excitement into your life- just avoid cliff diving in Costa Rica.
12. A birthday should always be celebrated the right way.
If it's your 21st or your 13th, the Gilmore Girls know how to party! After watching Lorelai parade a group of pre-teens through stars hollow to collect makeup, candy, and party favors, I wished that I could have gone back to my 12-year-old self and made that happen. Of course, who could beat turning 21 in Atlantic City, Playing 21, and buying 21 things?
13. You don't ever really have to grow up.
If being an adult includes sleeping late, planning big events, and hello kitty everything, sign me up.
14. Your mother is always one of your best friends.
This just says it all.
15. You can always come home.
I can't wait to go back to Stars Hollow! Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life will be available on Netflix (hopefully) soon! Time to start over with season one while I wait for the episodes to start streaming!
