When the lazy days of summer end and a new semester arrives our mornings tend to get busier and the amount of time we have to get ready for the day can become shorter. Especially for those of us lucky enough to be #blessed with 8 am classes.
Let's be honest, as much as I love all things beauty, compared to high school, I rarely wear a full face of makeup to my college classes. The people I grace with my presence are typically lucky if I had time to dry shampoo my hair and remember pants.
Makeup is never a necessity, and we don't owe the world "pretty." Especially at 8 am.You're enough just as you are right when you wake up. (Okay, maybe right when you wake up and brush your teeth.) But, there are those days I want to choose to look a little more put together or hide my I-haven't-gotten-more-than-4-hours-of-sleep under-eye circles. Sometimes, a bright pink lipstick can boost your mood just enough to get you out the door for that lecture.
Combine early mornings after late night study sessions, long commutes and the Oklahoma heat (for those first few months until the glorious thing that is Fall happens here at Oklahoma State.) and you get an equation that equals a need for simple and multi-tasking but long lasting beauty products. Here are my favorites! I tried to include a mix of both drugstore and high-end, because if we have to eat ramen every day, we probably can't afford to go to Ulta or Sephora on the regular. Some of these products are definitely not everyday products, but I thought I'd include them for their long-wearing qualities. Enjoy!
1. Rimmel London Match Perfection Skin Tone Adapting Concealer
$4.97-$5.99 any place drugstore products are sold.
Here me out on this one. I'll be the first to say I am always skeptical when it comes to products that promise to magically match to my skin tone. I decided to pick this up because I love anything that conceals and highlights without being glittery. This concealer is not extremely highlighting, and I wouldn't describe it as glowy, but it somehow magically brightens my under eye area instantly while also slightly concealing dark circles. I like that it isn't shimmery, but it still manages to brighten. You may prefer a higher coverage concealer if you tend to have problematic dark circles, but this is perfect for light coverage and brightening. Also, If you're really pale it can be hard to find a shade of drugstore concealer that can brighten that area, but this one does a great job (I use the shade fair.) For ladies with darker skin tones it is perfect for highlighting when doing a contoured look. It blends extremely easy so it's great for those mornings I have literally five minutes to get out the door. I can even put this stuff on without a mirror and know that I'm not going to look like a splotchy unblended mess. This also never creases. The best part is it is never more than about six dollars a tube. Comes in the following shades: Fair, Fair Light, Light, Light Medium, Medium.
2. Maybelline Master Conceal Camouflaging Concealer
$8.99 at Ulta Beauty or any place drugstore products are sold.
I was definitely surprised that this came in my shade, but I'm so glad it does. This is a little higher coverage than the Rimmel concealer and the peach undertones make it great for dark circles or blemishes. This does take a little more effort to blend, but still blends well without creasing. Comes in the following shades: Fair, Light, Light/Medium, Medium, Medium Deep.
3. Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer
$7.99 at Ulta beauty or any place drugstore products are sold.
One of my favorite products for quick and easy brightening. I love this quick little pen that adds sleep to my face. Blendable and a bit more glowy than the Rimmel highlighting concealer. It creates a natural glow and brightening effect without the chunky shimmer frequently found in drugstore highlighting products. Some beauty gurus even compare it to the makeup junkie favorite YSL Touche Eclat.
Comes in a variety of shades depending on store location. (Some stores include a neutralizing and brightening shade.)
4. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50+
$38.00 at Ulta Beauty
This is one of the most pricey items on my list, but it really worked for me. I love BB creams and CC creams, but I never can find the right shade in drugstore brands. This one finally worked for me, so if you're pale or have a unique skin tone, give it a try. (I promise this is not just for the abnormally pale princesses out there, but I've got to help a girl out if I have the chance!) It's a miraculous concoction that has coverage similar to a foundation, but the feeling of a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. (CC cream is the color correcting cousin to BB cream.) This product is super blendable and leaves a natural finish. It also has SPF so it is a great multitasking product, perfect for those busy mornings. This lasts much longer than your typical BB cream or tinted moisturizer, but if you're looking for an extremely long wearing product, this may not be for you. Oil prone beauties might want to finish with a setting powder. Comes in the following shades: Fair, Light, Medium, Tan and Rich.
5. Nyx Cosmetics BB Cream
One of my favorite "drugstore" brands, Nyx rarely disappoints. This provides light coverage and feels great on the skin. It's perfect for busy mornings when you just want to quickly even out your skin tone and look a little more awake. This is a cheaper alternative to the IT Cosmetics cream, but definitely not a dupe when it comes to coverage level. Although common for BB creams, the shade selection is unfortunately pretty limited, with shades Nude, Natural, and Golden as the only options.
6. Revlon ColorStay Makeup for Normal/Dry Skin SPF 15
$12.99 at Ulta Beauty or any place drugstore products are sold.
I love Revlon and I love this foundation. I prefer wearing lighter face products for class, but thought I'd include a foundation that's perfect for long days. This is something I definitely don't wear every day, but if you're needing a foundation to be long lasting, this is what you need. It lasts all day, doesn't break me out, doesn't look bad in pictures, and comes in a decent shade range (for drugstore at least.) If you want something that is going to stay on your face during all your long walks to class or if you're dancing the night away, this is seriously the foundation for you. Add a setting spray and it is unstoppable. It doesn't feel tacky, has full coverage, and dries to a matte-but-not-flat finish. Comes in two formulas, one for dry skin and one for oily/combination skin, and the shades range from a true porcelain to a medium deep skintone. This foundation also just recently received a makeover and now has a pump in its packaging!
7. Better Than Sex Mascara Too Faced
$23.00 at Ulta Beauty or Sephora
Definitely in my top 3 mascaras, this mascara doesn't flake and instantly makes me look wide awake with its volumizing and jet-black powers. It also comes in a waterproof version with adorable packaging.
8. L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara
$7.60-$9.99 any place drugstore products are sold.
I debated including this one, but decided to based on its product and not the packaging. This mascara is great and is comparable to They're Real by Benefit Cosmetics when it comes to giving crazy length. This is perfect for days when you're in a big hurry and just want to put on concealer and a few swipes of mascara. Every time I wore this I got compliments. However, the packaging really needs an upgrade because often the wand becomes bent.
9. They're Real! Lengthening Mascara
$24.00 Ulta Beauty or Sephora
This mascara gives you unbelievable length in a way no other mascara ever has for me. The formula doesn't flake and lasts all day. It is one of the few mascaras where I am happy with just applying a few coats without eyeliner when I'm in a hurry. This definitely makes you look more awake with just a coat or two, and won't melt on your face during a long walk to class.
10. Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush
$28.00 Ulta
Yes this is pricey, yes I am a firm believer in drugstore blush. HOWEVER. If you use this blush once you will soon learn that Tarte has the greatest blush formula in the Universe in the history of ever. This stuff will brighten your face with one swipe and will last through hours of lecture and walking. They aren't lying when they call it 12 Hour Blush. For a cheaper alternative, my favorites are Nyx Cosmetics baked blushes and HD blushes sold at Ulta from $6.99. They do the same brightening trick, they just don't last quite as long on the face.
11. Benefit Cosmetics CORALista Blush
$29.00 Ulta Beauty
Yet again overpriced for a blush product, but something about this perfect coral color just makes everyone look more awake and ready for the day. The color is similar to Nars Orgasm but with less shimmer. The amount of product you get for the price is pretty nice, but I still try to find it in mini versions or in palettes so I can justify the price. It also smells like a tropical vacation so there's that, too.
12. Colored Balm Pencils
I decided to include all my favorite brands in the text below because if I created a bullet point for every favorite colored balm crayon I have, we would be here all night. You don't want that, I don't want that. These are perfect for those busy mornings because I can apply these without a mirror or on my way to class, and I know I won't come out looking like a clown! They pair perfectly with natural makeup looks and just offer a wash of color that help bring everything together and make you look more awake. I'm obsessed with lip crayons for when I want something super easy.
Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick $8.79
Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm $17.00
NYC New York Color City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color $2.77
Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien $26.00 (This is pricy but Nars lip crayons are from the heavens and this particular shade is the best "my lips but better" shade. It's often featured in the Sephora free birthday gift.)
13. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick
$24.00 Sephora or Ulta Beauty
Liquid lipstick changed my lip color game. It stays on forever, it's drink and eat proof, smudgeproof, and everything else proof. When I want to look a little *fancy* I'll slap on some liquid lipstick and it stays all day throughout my classes. This one is my all time favorite formula. It dries matte without looking dry, and it truly is everything-proof. Close runners-up include Nyx Soft Matte Lip cream, Nyx Lingerie Liquid Lipstick, Kat Von D liquid lipstick, and The Balm.
14. Naked Basics Eyeshadow Palette Urban Decay
$29.00
This palette is perfect for natural eye looks, and it makes you look put together in a short amount of time. All of the shades match well with each other; it is basically foolproof. It comes in a warm palette and a cooler toned palette. (UD is also about to drop a new all matte Naked Basics palette so get your wallet ready for that one.)
15. Urban Decay De-Slick or All Nighter Setting Spray
$14.00 for trial size at Ulta Beauty
This stuff is AMAZING. I was skeptical at first and thought it seemed a bit gimmicky. Both formulas are fairly similar and will make your makeup last ALL DAY. I sweat like none other, (TMI sorry.) and this product keeps my makeup looking like I had just applied it. I swear by it. It's pricey but I honestly only pick up the trial sizes because they last me forever. I promise your makeup will not melt off during those long class days if you use a few spritz of this.
