The cinematic world has been a conquerer of entertainment since its creation and has even managed to convert former-readers into avid movie-goers. However, some of the written word has made its way to the big screen, including the lives of many beloved comic book superheroes. After all, it's no secret that the Avengers, Batman, Superman, and all their superhero buddies got their first big appearances between the printed sheets of comic books. But what you probably don't know is several movies have their origins in comic books.
"Oldboy"
Comic: 1996 - 1998 | Film: 2003 (Korea), 2013 (US)
Although the US was severely behind in their rendition of this amazing manga, the art and story of the printed word still challenge even Park Chan-wook's amazing rendition.
"Annie"
Comic: 1924 - 2010 | Film: 1982 (original), 2014 (remake)
Most known for her musical adaptation, Annie actually stole her first hearts through comic books.
"Blue is the Warmest Color"
Comic: 2010 | Film: 2013
Originally a French graphic novel, this movie was a hit in theaters with the deep complex emotional and sexual tensions felt between the main characters.
"Alien vs. Predator"
Comic: 1991 | Film: 2004
Ridley Scott made a killing with the dynamic alien-predator duo, but who knew he got his inspiration from Dark Horse's comic series?
"2 Guns"
Comic: 2007 | Film: 2013
Originally a comic mini-series, Mark Walberg and Denzel Washington bring their characters to live on the screen, leaving their paperback origins in the dust.
"30 Days of Night"
Comic: 2002 | Film: 2010
With all the superhero hype, it's easy to forget how influential the horror genre of comic books has been in our culture, giving us the origins of amazing horror films such as this!
"Whiteout"
Comic: 1998 | Film: 2009
In many cases, films do better than their paperback brethren, but not in this case. The amazing use of white space utilized on the page was a creative astonishment in comics, but the movie it led to did not do nearly as well in the box offices.
"Over the Hedge"
Comic: 1995 - present | Film: 2006
It shouldn't be a surprise to hear an animated film has its roots in comics, but this one you may have never guessed. However, much of the adult satire is sacrificed on the screen for the viewing of a much younger crowd.
"A History of Violence"
Comic: 1997 | Film: 2005
With how overwhelmingly well this movie has done, it has also become known as one of the best comic book adaptations ever created.
"Snowpiercer"
Comic: 1982 - 2000 | FIlm: 2013
Originally coined Le Transperceneige, this French comic book series actually made it's first on screen debut as a Korean film that was later adapted for English viewers.
"The Crow"
Comic: 1989 | Film: 1994
Based on the original idea of James O'Barr, this great suspense movie needs to be on your must-see list of Netflix favorites!
"The Addams Family"
Comic: 1938 - 1988 | Film: 1991, 1993, 1998
Everyone's favorite odd gothic neighbors actually started with a small mention in Family Circus about some interesting new neighbors that moved into their neighborhood.
"Men in Black"
Comic: 1990 - 1997 | Film: 1997, 2002, and 2012
Based on the amazingly well written and drawn group of secret agents, Hollywood added a comical (excuse the pun) twist to the story by giving the lead roles to two men who have great on and off screen chemistry.
"Push"
Comic: 2008 - 2009 | Film: 2009
Another mini-series that managed to make its way to the big screen. Proving once again that comics often save Hollywood a lot of time and money trying to come up with new ideas for their fans.
"The Mask"
Comic: 1989 - 2000 | Film: 1994 and 2005
Arguably one of the best Jim Carey films absolutely nailed the zany character created by his comic predecessor.
So next time you go to the latest blockbuster, just remember, it may have its roots in comics and is definitely worth checking out!
