The 80s produced some of the greatest, most classic movies of all time. While you really should watch as many as you can, here are the 15 that you must see.
15. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Even though Who Framed Roger Rabbit is half live action, half animation, you won't even notice due to its ability to keep you simultaneously laughing and on the edge of your seat for almost 2 full hours.
14. The Goonies (1985)
This is a cult classic that is ready to take you on an adventure. This group of kids is unforgettable.
13. The Princess Bride (1987)
This is a love story for the ages, set in a fantasy world, with a touch of adventure. Basically, it's a must see. It's sure to captivate your heart.
12. Full Metal Jacket (1987)
There will not be a dry eye wherever you are watching this. It is set in the Vietnam War, and, for anyone who loves history, or just a good story, this is a must.
11. The Untouchables (1987)
Set in the Prohibition era, The Untouchables is one of my all time favorites. While it can get a little grisly (totally 80s style though, nothing too creepy-realistic), it is, hands down, still one of the best movies about Prohibition to date.
10. Die Hard (1988)
First of all, Die Hard is totally a Christmas movie. Anyone who says differently is just kidding themselves. This is the first of a very high-energy, jam packed series. You'll get completely hooked, so be ready.
9. The Outsiders (1983)
This is one of the very few movies that live up to the book. Fair warning though: you will inevitably cry, laugh, and probably scream at the screen.
8. Dirty Dancing (1987)
This is a whole new play on the bad boy/good girl archetype. While you will likely grow to hate Baby in a way you usually only reserve for the villain, Johnny is such a redeeming character that you won't care.
7. Back to the Future (1985)
If you haven't already seen this, then shame on you. It's on TV like three times a month. Just do it already, man.
6. Dead Poet's Society (1989)
R.I.P. Robin Williams. He is absolutely incredible as John Keating. By the end of the movie, you will be wishing you had had him as a teacher for every year of your life. This is one of the greatest movies of all time, and you must see it. It will change your life.
5. Footloose (1984)
The original is so much better than that new one that just came out. Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer are extraordinary, and you can't not want to dance after watching it.
4. Scarface (1983)
This is an iconic gangster flick. Al Pacino is Tony. This may be the oldest movie on this list, but it is one of the greats.
3. Top Gun (1986)
I could write an entire article just on Top Gun, and why you should watch it. But I won't. Young Tom Cruise is hotter than ever. Maverick and Goose are friendship goals to the max. Everyone is walking around in uniforms. And there are some incredible flying scenes. Trust me. It's well worth the watch.
2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
You can't make a list of great 80s movies without including Ferris Bueller. If you haven't watched it by now, you must live under a rock. Go watch it. If you've already seen it, go watch it again.
1. The Breakfast Club (1985)
This is (IMO) the greatest movie ever made, of all time. It will break your heart, make you laugh til you cry, and take you back to the glory days of high school. Words are insufficient, you have to watch it to understand.
Go, enjoy, binge.
