Every college has its quirks and every student body has their unique characteristics and traditions. Southeastern and its students are no exception. No matter if you’re a commuter, freshman, resident assistant, or even a professor, you’ve probably experienced most of these things during the time you've spent at Southeastern:
1. Your Biggest Stress of the Day is Parking
No, it’s not that exam you’ve got coming up in the afternoon or the homework assignment you’ve been procrastinating on. It’s the fact you know every single day, no matter how hard you try, you will have to fight for a parking spot. Every parking lot is a borderline war zone.
2. You Unite with Others over Hatred of the Math Lab
It’s an experience everyone must go through, a rite of
passage here on campus. No food, no water, no cellphones, no music. Just math.
3. You’ve Climbed the Dvickers Stairs
We’ve all had to climb these and all of us have pretended we weren’t out of breath when we finally got to the top. Mt. Everest training, anyone?
4. You’re Willing to Wait in Line for Starbucks
…and Chick-Fil-A…and Mooyah. Pretty much, unless you’re eating at Taco Bell, you’re waiting in line.
5. You Dress in Layers just to Survive the Temperature of the Library
Walking into the library is like walking into a refrigerator. When you get dressed in the morning, you seriously consider bringing a winter jacket along just so you can study in the library later.
6. You Find Your Hall Desolate and Uninhabited
Approximately 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, you find yourself living on a deserted campus. Whether they are hitting the town or going home for the weekend, Southeastern students suddenly disappear.
7. You’ve Become too Familiar with the Fourth Floor
It’s like a casino--you lose track of time and study up there for hours; you know every nook and cranny. And you’ve probably taken a nap up there, too.
8. You’ve Hung Out under the Friendship Oak
Whether you’ve played music, studied, or kissed, you’ve spent time underneath the branches of the most beautiful tree on campus.
9. You Never Know What You’ll See by the Union
Whether it’s religious protesters, people having a random jam session, a farmer’s market, or a pottery sale, there’s always something random happening to break up the monotony of classes.
10. You and Your Wallet Enjoy Rental Textbooks
Even if you don’t ever read them. They’re there, and they are not required to purchase.
11. You Know You’re More than Just a Number
Your professor knows you by name, and you know the names of everyone who sits by you in class, especially in your upper-level ones.
12. You’re a Part of the Biggest Smallest Campus Out There
Since freshman year, you’ve seen many of the same faces, had classes with the same people many times over, and pretty much feel like this is your home. Although almost 15,000 people are enrolled, there’s nothing about Southeastern that makes you feel overwhelmed or unnoticed.
13. You’ve Eaten Gumbo at Gumbo Ya-Ya
Students from other universities will look at you like you’re crazy when you say you’re looking forward to Gumbo Ya-Ya. But you know that it’s just another one of Southeastern’s amazing homecoming traditions.
14. You’re Proud to Lion Up
No matter its quirks, this is your campus and you love being a part of it. Whether in the classroom or out of it, there are certain things you experience here that you know you couldn’t find anywhere else.
