The University of Arizona is known for its Eller Business School, so when someone asks you what your major is they give you crazy eyes when you explain that you are not majoring in business. I am a Journalism major at the UA and I am used to getting bug eyes and questions as soon as I answer what my major is. However, the Journalism school at the University of Arizona is great and I am so happy with my major. Getting to go out on your own, explore the area for potential stories, and talking to people to seek information is what journalism is all about! You really get yourself out there and can find out about a lot of cool and interesting things that happen in certain areas that you would of never known before! Journalism is all about exploring and informing the world with what is going on in different places.
Here are 14 signs you're a journalism major:
- Like I said, you get confused gestures from others when you explain to them that you are not a business major.
- Every email you have is from someone in the journalism department explaining what is going on within the college for the week and other journalism opportunities that are available.
- When your friends want to try a new restaurant for the first time, you are thinking about doing a story on it rather than enjoying time with your friends.
- You spend your free time interviewing people for a story of a multimedia project rather than laying in bed watching Netflix.
- You are one of the students on campus who actually need a car to get to one interview to another, especially when you cannot cover stories on the UA campus.
- You attend extra credit movie screenings because you need all the extra credit you can get with all the pop quizzes you receive in each and every class.
- You have an internship fair through the J-School and can meet with as many companies that you can see yourself interning for.
- All your classes are in one building, the Marshall building, and it is so convenient.
- You realize how fun journalism is when you get to talk to all kinds of people and hear about their personal life stories and experiences.
- There are workshops in order for you to improve on your writing! (There are also donuts and all kinds of other food provided at the workshops, so that’s a plus!)
- There are only 20 students in each one of your classes so you know everyone.
- On that note, each of those 20 students is in almost every one of your classes so you always see a familiar face.
- The teachers are very down to earth and always available to speak with their students.
- The J-School building provides vending machines in the reading room, couches, computer labs, and paradise bakery is right downstairs so you basically never have to leave the building!
