People say that college is the best years you'll have in your entire life. In many ways, it's true. Compared to your high school career, you have so much more freedom and time and many more opportunities to explore who you really are. Don't get me wrong: merely having the status as a "college student" doesn't grant you with unforgettable memories, long lasting friends, and once in a lifetime experiences. The world is your oyster, and all you have to do is take advantage of it. Here are 14 things every individual should do before graduating college:
1. Pull an all-nighter
Ah yes, the inevitable. The coffee. The dark circles. You may hate yourself for the next 12 hours you're awake, but when everything is over, you'll look back at the memory fondly. Because face it, after you start working, you'll never be a college student again.
2. Go to a football game
I'll say this right off the bat: I'm not a real football fan. In fact, I don't even know the rules or how the sport actually works. But let me tell you this: go to one game. The feeling you get, you'll never be able to experience it elsewhere. The sea of school colors across the huge stadium. The roaring of the student section. The view you get from your seat of the bright green field. I can't describe to you how it felt to be there, because everything felt so surreal. It's just something you have to experience for yourself.
3. Get drunk
I used to be one who scoffed at people who said the "college experience." Although it's not good to make this a habit every single weekend, it's fun to dip your toes in different waters. Have fun! But do so safely.
4. Make a friend outside your normal group
College is all about expanding new horizons. Befriend an Art Major as a Business student. Go to lunch with that international student from Malaysia. Staying in your comfort zone is relaxing and easy, but you'll never know what you can learn from the people you're constantly "othering."
5. Study abroad
I know this isn't the first time you've heard this one. Upperclassmen. Mentors. Alumni. They all say this. So why not? Studying overseas might seem intimidating and a lot of work at first, but after doing the right research and reaching out to the right resources, it will surely give you an experience you'll remember for a lifetime.
6. Go to a party
It doesn't have to be a frat party. It can just be a gathering with some friends at their house. I don't know about you, but parties just hype me up. It's a wonderful place to meet new people and kindle friendships. And of course, to have fun.
7. Internships
There's only so much a classroom can do. Put yourself out there. Go to career networking events. Go out in to the "real world."
8. Fall in love ... with yourself
Don't make college about finding your "other half." Because truth be told, you're whole the way you are. Learn and explore about what interests you. These four years are about you and discovering who you really are. You might just surprise yourself.
9. Join a club
Always liked writing? Passionate about politics? Now is the time to follow these desires. By joining a club, you'll not only be able to do what you love but be with other people who feel the exact same way.
10. Take a class outside your major
Gain new perspectives. Take an art history class as a biology student. Take a poly-sci course as a music major. It will never be to your disadvantage to broaden your interests.
11. The walk of shame
It's only shameful if you make it shameful.
12. Fall asleep in lecture
Just like the all-nighter, let this be a fond memory of the past. You'll laugh about it. Smile about it. Talk about it with your peers. Because when will be the next time you'll be forgiven for falling asleep in a lecture?
13. Attend a musical or a play or any music event
Chances are, your university is filled with an ample of opportunities to explore the arts. Take advantage of it. It can be a campus orchestra. Or an acapella concert. Let the talent, creativity, and passion take you away.
14. Explore the campus at night
Sneak in a few buildings if you can. The university in the night is one of the most awesome, unique experiences ever.
