14 Things Only People With Siblings Will Understand

Attention everyone with siblings: whether you have older siblings, younger siblings, many siblings, or just one sibling, we can all relate to the up sides and down sides of having these annoying and stressful, yet fun and amazing, people in our lives. In a way, siblings are like friends that you can’t choose. As a result, you can’t get rid of them, no matter what. Although sometimes they can be a handful, having siblings makes life that much more interesting. Here are 14 things that anyone can relate to if they have siblings.

1. Food stealing.

No matter how clear you make it that something in the fridge belongs to you, a sibling will ALWAYS take the food. Not possibly, not probably: it is CERTAIN. There are three things certain in life: death, taxes, and siblings stealing food from one another.

This is probably your reaction when it happens:

2. Your things go missing.

You know you have siblings if your stuff goes missing without a trace. You must have misplaced it, you think. Where could your headphones be? You walk into the living room to try to search for them and then you see your brother/sister standing there, headphones in their ears. Thanks for letting me know you borrowed them before I just wasted an hour of my day looking for them…

3. Sporting events.

You will never be exempt from a sibling's sporting event. Whether they play a sport for one year or seven years, you will be attending every single one whether you like it or not.

4. The act of manipulating.

So one of your parents gave you a chore to do or told you to get something for them. Obviously you don’t want to do it so chances are, you will go up to your sibling or your sibling will come up to you and tell you that “Mom/Dad wants you to do this for them.” Most of the time it may not work but when it does, it makes you glad you have someone who will take your word for just about anything.

5. The TV War.

You think you are going to watch your favorite TV show? Think again. We all remember that trick of putting your hand in front of the sensor of the television so that your sibling can not change the channel. It was the lowest possible thing a sibling could do when you were younger, but I’m sure you were guilty of it too.

6. Learning what works and what doesn't.

Sometime you don’t even have to make mistakes to learn from them. All you have to do is watch what your siblings get in trouble for something and know what you can and won’t get away with.

7. Your music taste is almost the same.

A lot of times you have the same music tastes as our siblings, so when all of you are in the car together you can jam out.

8. The feeling of already being known.

If you have older siblings specifically, when you walk into a new place or new school, you have this feeling of already being known. You are definitely used to the phrase “Oh, you must be *insert name* brother/sister.” You already have some sort of identity, but let’s hope your sibling made good impressions because who they are is how people will probably will look at you until you prove them wrong.

9. Road trips.

Just thinking of family road trips with siblings already makes me laugh. Being in an enclosed area for hours with siblings can make for some interesting experiences.

10. Your collection of secrets is filled to capacity.

If you have more secrets than you can count, it’s probably because you have siblings that contribute to that count. You have each other’s backs, so when they need you to keep something a secret or when you need them to keep a secret for you, you can trust each other. It’s just sibling code.

11. Insult wars.

You know you have siblings if your insult vocabulary is so insane, so crazy, and so random. You go back and forth at times until it just becomes funny and don’t even remember why you were fighting in the first place.

12. The Netflix queue.

Netflix is great because it customizes your viewing experience so that the things they recommend for you are based off of the things you have already watched. But wait, what is that? Why is there about 10 TV shows, documentaries, and movies all about football on your recommendations list? You don’t even watch football that regularly. Oh right, it’s because your brother watched "The League" on your Netflix account and now your recommendations don’t match your taste. Thanks sibling…

13. Getting away with something.

If you are an only child and something goes wrong in your house, your parents know it was you. However, if you have siblings, you may just slip out of it. Say you insult your sibling and you are about to get in trouble for it. Just use the magic words “He/She started it” and you will be golden.

14. You have a relationship like no other.

A lot of times it’s hard to be completely yourself when you are around others, but who you are when you are with your siblings is the real you. There is something comforting about that. Although you have fights and issues with each other, you all love each other. You can’t pick your siblings, but you couldn’t think of any other people you would rather have as your siblings. And that’s what makes having them so awesome.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
