14 Sayings from Grace College
Emily Keyser

Sometimes I feel like I have the same conversation over and over again. This may be due to the fact that certain phrases are used on pretty much a daily basis around here. Here are just a few of them...

1. "GREC" "MOCC" "GGL" "SAB"

Grace has a lot of abbreviations and for the first few weeks, it can be pretty confusing. But once they're in your vocabulary, you don't even bat an eyelash when you hear them.

2. "What's your personality type?"

We're big on the Myers-Briggs here. I guess it has something to do with knowing yourself but really, don't let four letters define you. (I definitely rock the ENTJ label, though)

3. "I love my hall!"

Grace doesn't have Greek life but some of the dorms on campus are notorious for forming close, close community on the halls. Most people would say it's not the same thing but if you ever saw an Alpha hall out in public, you'd think it was a sorority.

4. "Are you doing anything for open dorms?"

My public school friends are always confused when I talk about open dorms. Every Friday and Saturday night dorm are open to people of the opposite gender. Yes, that means that the rest of the week boy can't come in girl's dorms and vice versa. But hey, it makes it more fun when they can!

5. "Are you a three year or four year?"

Grace does this cool thing where you can get your degree in three years. Not everyone does it but for those who do, it saves a lot of money. And on top of that, certain programs have a fourth-year master's degree. So, typically, when people ask your major, they also ask this question.

6. "Caleb."

For whatever reason, about twenty years ago, a bunch of parents decided to name their new baby boy the same name: Caleb. And then somehow, they all ended up here, Seriously though, I know like seven guys named Caleb.

7. "Don't forget to sign in!"

Curfew. That thing that keeps freshmen from being freshmen. Thank goodness for curfew. But, if you don't sign in on the weekends you could end up with a hefty fine.

8. "I got this shirt for free."

My T-shirt collection got totally revamped thanks to all the free shirts SAB hands out.

9. "What time did you go to bed last night?"

I guess this pretty common question among college students everywhere.

10. "Which church do you go to?"

People are always interested what area church you go to. A lot of people answer this question with Mission Point (me) or WCC but some people answer with churches that you've never even heard of.

11. "Let's go study at Light Rail."

College students love their coffee and Light Rail seems to be the preferred variety of most here. We have a coffee shop on campus but why go there when you can walk across campus, down a huge hill, and into the village for more expensive coffee that you can't use your flex to pay for?

And speaking of flex...

12. "I'm almost out of flex."

For some, this day never comes. But for others, namely me, this day comes very soon into the semester. Like I said, college students love their coffee.

13. "It's nug day!"

Chicken nugget day... There's waffle fries, mac & cheese, and of course, chicken nuggets. What more could you ask for?

14. "There's a really awkward couple in Alpha Lobby."

Since dorms aren't co-ed, couples have limited places to go sit. A lot of them choose to sit in Alpha Lobby. This can be annoying for people going through to get to Alpha Dining or for girls who actually live there because there is almost always at least one couple, if not more, sitting there. And for the most part, they're super awkward. If you're an Alpha couple and this is news to you, please stop being gross.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
