Everyone has bad days. It's just the way that life is. And everyone knows someone who has had or is having a bad day. It is never fun to see someone you know sad or feeling down, because you know what it's like to feel that way. Maybe they are more or less sad than you've been, but we all still know that it is not the best time. So when you know someone who's not having that great of a time, here are some simple things you can do that I've found to help make all the difference.
1. Give a compliment. It's an easy thing to do, and it goes a long way. Just saying something nice about them will give some warm and fuzzies. If it's a genuine compliment, they will know.
2. Have a conversation. Again, a very simple task, but also very important. Talking about anything, just getting an engaged and friendly conversation going can mean a lot. It often takes people's minds off of what's going on, and it creates a connection with them.
3. Listen. Not all the time will they want to talk about what's wrong, but if they do, often times what they need most is an open ear. You don't need to know exactly how to respond or have the perfect answer for them, but just being there and letting them know you're listening to them is a weight off their shoulders.
4. Be company. If they aren't in the mood for talking at all, just being with them so they know there is someone there is important.
5. Smile. It's only a few muscles you need to move. But giving someone a genuine smile will get their attention in a positive way.
6. Make a drawing. It doesn't need to be perfect, but just making something for them is always appreciated. Drawing something they like and just surprising them with it is great.
7. Play their favorite song. Whether it's a jam out song, or something slow, just hearing music that they love is a great stress reliever. They'll likely sing or move along, and getting energy out that way feels amazing.
8. Give a hug. Just a little contact. Obviously make sure they are okay with one first, but that physical contact can fill a person up so much.
9. Make them some food. You don't need to be the best cook (I know I'm not), but just making cookies or any little things works. Food can be such a comfort, and giving them some can be such a good surprise.
10. Get them a drink. Pay for it. Maybe they need to get somewhere fast, or maybe it's cold out . Just get them a little something. And it's not going to break your bank at all. But no matter what the situation, it will be appreciated.11. Hold open a door. It's always a courteous thing to do anyway, but it can really mean a lot. It's generous and shows care, and when someone is down, care makes them feel better.12. Let them know you're thinking about them. This is helpful for when the person isn't as close by, but can still be something to do for someone near. Knowing they're thought of can brighten anyone's day.
13. Say 'have a nice day'. Easy as that. Letting them know you care and want them to do well can be said as easily as those four words. And people take that to heart.
Not all of these will work every time, but these are ones I've known to be very effective. And of course there are more ways to make a person feel good. Any random act of kindness can make a day better. Letting them know you care, treating them nicely, being a friendly person-- all of these can make someone's day. And the best part about it? Doing nice things for people can make you feel good, and make your day better as well.So if you're feeling down, pay it forward and do something nice for someone. It'll make your day too.
Have a nice day :)
