13 Truths All Violinists Can Relate To

1. "Don't touch the hair" being drilled into you that even if you've stopped playing, the idea of touching a bow still freaks you out.

2. The fear of breaking your E string the first time you tune it alone... and the second time... and the third time...

3. Listening to yourself playing as a beginner and cringing when you hear how horrendous and screechy it sound, but hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Even Mozart was out of tune once.

4. The struggles of learning any position other than first (bonus points if you just had one massive sticker instead of individual tapes).

This though.

5. Arguing over who got to play first violin, because everyone knows first gets to play the fun melodies.

6. The struggle that was vibrato. It looked fancy, sounded gorgeous (if done correctly), but was a difficult trick to master. Third finger was always the easiest, followed by second, then first, and fourth was an absolute nightmare.

7. Having a distinct preference for bluegrass fiddle music, hip-hop music, or classical music.

8. Not having to correct people because you don't play viola.

9. Being jealous of the marching band, even though you knew you were just awesome.

How did someone ever come up with this?

10. Rosin. Everything about rosin; it was messy, always needed, or broken.

11. Being able to pick out your parts when you heard a familiar piece.

12. The child prodigies on YouTube being both incredibly humiliating and humbling.

13. Always being asked if you could play this

Thanksgiving Break is most likely everyone’s favorite break during the fall semester. You get to go home and reminisce with all your high school friends. That diet you’ve been on for the past month goes out the window, and you get to eat until you put yourself into a food coma. There’s no rush on homework and you can just lie in bed and Netflix to your heart’s content. To me that sounds like an ideally wonderful break, and totally stress-free.

Even Shonda Rhimes, winning creator and executive producer of the hit TV shows Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Catch agrees that relationships with fictional characters are real. In her book, The Year of Yes she states, "I have spent more time with Meredith and Christina then many of my actual friends...When you watched TV, even spending a full hour with Christina once a week, you were likely spending more time with her then you spent with most people in your life. That relationship was real."

Going to the gym and working out on a daily basis (with breaks once in awhile) has been a great way for me to feel good about myself. It is 100% more than just looking good. Especially after starting college and having the stress and anxiety of tests, assignments, and just figuring out my future, the gym at my school has definitely been a place of relief for me and I have numerous reasons of why everyone should push themselves to get to the gym when they can.
