If you're home over the summer, you're no doubt enjoying spending time with your high school friends, sharing fun college stories, and reminiscing about the days of yore. If you're studying abroad or working at an internship far from home, you might have begun the summer a little lonely but have, by now, settled in and met some fantastic people.
Wherever you are this summer, you're likely not hanging out constantly with the friends you made in college. This might mess with your head a bit and lead to some interesting musings that, try as you might, you just can't control.
1. It's so weird that my roommate isn't with me right now.
You may not have been best friends with your roommate, but they were a part of your life for nine months, and adjusting to life without them might be more unsettling than you initially thought it would be.
2. To FaceTime with people regularly, or not to FaceTime at all? That is indeed the question.
It's a fine line between making time to catch up on your friends' summers and devoting your entire summer to doing so.
3. How is this Groupme still blowing up with messages even when none of us are at school?!
Somehow, people still find funny pictures to meme even when you're all hundreds of miles apart. Ah, the wonders of Groupme.
4. Well, it's a Friday night, where's my usual party crew? Oh wait, they're all far away from me and each other.
It might take a week or so to adjust your social routine.
5. Wow, I completely forgot about [insert memorable moment here], what a crazy day that was!
Some of the best, weirdest, or "oh-so-college" memories from the school year may pop into your head at the most random of moments.
6. Though the dining hall food was not ideal, I do miss the unlimited meal swipes and unnecessarily long lunches that I shared with my school friends.
What you wouldn't give to be eating Generic Chicken And Rice every day again, just to talk and laugh with your college friends over meals. But who are you kidding, home food is so much better than school food, that it almost makes up for it.
7. Whoa, so-and-so is playing at a theater near our school next week?! Wait, just kidding, none of us can go because geography is a thing.
You probably got used to checking for your favorite musicians performing in or near your college town, but over the summer, don't get too excited if they're playing literally a 10-minute walk from your dorm.
8. My Sunday nights feel so empty without endless hours spent at the library with my people, attempting to do all of our work that we didn't do last week.
You may not miss the heavy workload, but there's something to be said for the camaraderie that arises in a room full of desperate college students who are just trying to stay afloat. They know that they're all in it together.
9. What if my college friends are all magically hanging out without me?!
The FOMO is strong with this one.
10. Nah, that's not possible, but I still genuinely wonder what they're all up to when they're not Snapchatting.
Just don't waste your time wondering by looking longingly into the distance like Loki.
11. Wow, I really wish I had more exciting things to put on Snapchat, my Snap story just can't compare with riding horses through the rainforest or whatever my one friend is doing.
Some people's Snap stories make their lives look as exciting and thrilling as a well-crafted reality show. It's really quite remarkable what 5-second clips can say about the true depth of a person's life.
12. I forgot how much some of my college friends are like my high school friends, the resemblance is uncanny.
We've all had that moment of doing a double-take at school when we see someone that looks exactly like a friend from home. Once you're home long enough, the same thing may start happening when you see home friends or acquaintances, realizing how much they look like a college friend.
13. Well, I've loved my summer, but I seriously can't wait to see everyone at school again and settle back into our familiar routine.
Enjoy your summer, and take advantage of whichever friends you are fortunate enough to see over the summer. Before you know it, you'll be back at school wishing you had relished your summer more.
