Playing a high school sport is a different experience for everyone.
But almost anyone who was a tennis player can agree that there are certain things that make us different from other athletes. Some people don't understand tennis and that's fine. But believe me when I say that we are tough players in a tough sport.
Love means nothing (pun intended for all you tennis players out there).
1. You'll forever have tan lines.
Oh yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Don't ever try to wear a strapless dress to prom. And your legs get an awesome tan which really compliments your blindingly pale feet. It's a good look.
2. You hate people who lob.
We all hate a lobber. Why are you doing that? For the love of all things good, just hit the d*** ball!
3. Grunting. Period.
I'm not going to lie, sometimes I would strategically grunt just to get under my opponent's skin. But PLEASE, do not grunt if you are not even hitting the ball with any sort of force.
4. "Are you sure?"
With no referees, you have to trust your opponent to make fair calls. But we all know that there's always going to be someone who questions every call you make. And you can guarantee that your whole team is mimicking them on the sidelines.
5. Limp handshakes.
I'm sorry, am I shaking hands with a jellyfish?
6. Getting hit by a ball is like a gunshot.
It's not the best feeling in the world, trust me.
7. You're almost always in a tennis skirt.
You may get weird looks from the other grocery shoppers but it's fine because you know you look good.
8. The sound of a new can of balls opening is music to your ears.
I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
9. Your team is like family.
10. There are some team you don't like
You know who you are.
11. Doubles partners have the strongest form of trust.
You know your partner like the back of your hand.
12. Deuce.
Just hearing the word makes you cringe.
13. Your teammates will love you no matter what.
Nothing feels better than hearing your team cheer you on.
