13 Things To Love About Fall

Fall in Houston is usually an extension of the summer, but how fun is it to wear sweaters in 90 degree weather?

October is just around the corner, and I start getting ready for fall and Halloween at the end of June. So as each day passes I am just more and more excited, slowly swapping my flowy blouses and sandals for sweaters and boots. Placing pumpkins just about everywhere-including the cute little miniature ones. I even have my basket of pine cones ready. I’m a fall buff and one of my favorite activities to do in this lovely month of October is to binge watch horror movies. Sure, they don’t really scare me, after all, I am faced with the reality of life on a daily basis and really, what could be scarier than that? But horror movies are fun, and fall is lovely. Unfortunately, I live in a place where fall does not really happen in that leaf-dropping, bone-chilling, orange-and-red hue turning manner, but that still does not stop me from getting festive. So on the verge of fall, and in the midst of 18 assignments, I thought what better a way to get ready than by presenting my sentiments using some festive gifs!

Warning: These gifs may contain frightening material

1. How it feels when I can finally flip the calendar from September to October

2. Me when Starbucks breaks out all the spiced, and pumpkin drinks (ok, the pumpkin spice latte isn’t that great-tasting, but it smells amazing, smells like fall)

3. Seeing the word “autumn” in orange font, usually surrounded by graphics of leaves-true art

4. Meeting someone named “Johnny,” or alternatively, calling all the Johns you know, “Johnny”

5. That first cold breeze in the air

6. REDRUM (note: I don’t condone this, but the movie is fun ok?)

7. Walking around quoting my favorite movie of all time-shout out to my boy Lecter

8. Finding out that, yes, the 13th of October falls on a Friday this year

9. Booking tickets to Screamworld (Or the haunted house of your choice, but experience has taught me that Screamworld is simply the best)

10. Being unnecessarily superstitious about everything. I will pour salt everywhere. Y'all can’t stop me

11. Buying tons of apples because apples and cinnamon are my fall diet. Copious amounts of sugar and pastry sheets not included

12. Driving by Halloween stores (the amount of pleasure I get from this is somewhat embarrassing)

13. Orange glitter (note: orange is one of my most disliked colors, but October is an exception for this)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
