There are different dynamics between being a fan of an American artist and being a fan of a Korean artist, especially with groups. It isn't until later, when you're listening to American music after binging on Korean pop for ages, that you realize those different dynamics.
Not sure what I mean? Here are a few things that some international Korean pop (KPop) fans can probably relate to.
1. Calling a certain artist or member of a group your "bias."
"He's my favorite." "OMG, he's my bias, too!" "Wait...he's your what?" "...Nothing."
2. When discovering a new non-Korean group, wondering what each of their group roles are
So wait, is he the leader? Or the dancer? Wait who's the main vocal? How about the visual? The maknae? The rapper?
3. Feeling like the members of a group don't care about each other that much due to the lack of "skinship."
There's a distinct lack of no-homo cuddling or butt-touching here...
4. Or really the lack of any eye-contact that is clearly not sexual in the slightest.
Sorry, can't feel the love not enough eye contact.
5. Secretly wanting the youngest member of a group or a younger artist to do "Gwiyomi."
They've got the cuteness for it, so why not?
6. Also finding it kind of rude that the youngest doesn't refer to the other members as "Hyung" or "Unnie."
Respect your elders!
7. Thinking to yourself that this guy would look really pretty with a little bit of eyeliner.
Eyeliner isn't just for girls and emo groups, guys...
8. Also thinking to yourself that there isn't nearly enough hair color variety in this group.
Eyes are the windows to the soul, and hair color is the window to my attention span.
9. Wondering why this artist doesn't have an official color.
Everyone else has one!
10. Or a light-stick design...
What else am I suppose to wave around during a concert? A lighter? That's dangerous!
11. Or a practiced greeting...
I'm sorry, who are you?
12. Or any official fan chants to their songs...
Wait what? So I'm just supposed to sing along to the entire song?
13. Ultimately realizing that you don't actually know how to English anymore.
No, but what is this language? What are they saying?
