The new popular released Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why” has hit the world by storm. I started watching the series because I heard Selena Gomez was the executive producer, and I just had to watch it. Knowing nothing about the history of it, I clicked play and was hooked.
Selena Gomez spoke on why people need to watch the show about the important issues that need more attention. She said, "They have to see something that's going to shake them. They have to see something that's frightening. ... I want them to understand it. ... I would do anything to have a good influence on this generation.” I can definitely say, it had a good influence on me, and seeing recent social media engagements, it has on other;s too and people are finally talking about it.
If you're on social media, you know you’ve seen a bunch of tweets and posts about this show. Or if you live under a rock or simply if you haven’t heard about the show, let me explain it to you.
The Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why” is based on the 2007 book by Jay Asher of the same title. The plot of the series is that a highschool student, Hannah Baker, killed herself. Before she does, the teenager leaves behind a set of thirteen tapes explaining the reasons that led her to do the unthinkable. Each reason is for a specific person on the show and only they are the ones who have heard these tapes. The show is from the point of view of Hannah's classmate and lover, Clay. As he hears the tapes, he unravels the reasons why as well as secrets and lies of his other classmates that are on the tapes.
Why everyone should login to Netflix and watch this series is because this show is extremely important. The show touches upon many serious topics that many people face today but are too afraid to talk about due to having the insecurities of being judged or otherwise. Some of the many important issues it covers are bullying, assault, self-harm, anxiety, depression and suicide. The messages in the show leave you moved.
The show is important because it shows you that even if a person who doesn't visibly seem depressed doesn't mean they aren't. There are many other signs of depression than a person who is "sad" all the time. This show makes you realize that everything you say and do to a person has some sort of impact on their mental and physical health. The series shows that these dramatic events have a snowball effect on a person's life. The show has many heartbreaking moments, a lesson in each episode. Overall the show is inspirational, if you read the book by Asher or watch the series, I know it will change your perspective on life.
The reason im reviewing this show is because people everyday face these issues and people need to talk about it. I, myself have faced difficulties with some sort of bullying and having insecurities, just as any teenager would when they were in high school. I want people to realize the importance of this show because it's important to me and the people in my life who deal with these issues.
Something that I have learned from watching the show are that the tiniest things can become something big, and that your words can actually make a difference in someone's life, negative and positive. People leave everlasting experiences in other's lives. You will never know how and who you've impacted. I think "13 Reasons Why" is a great show and I recommend everyone to watch it. Remember, spread kindness around, it could save a life.
