13 Reasons To Visit Your Local Public Library

If you grew up watching PBS Kids, you probably sat through many episodes of "Arthur" (which for the record is still one of my favorites shows.) This means that you also probably know "Arthur" was a huge advocate for visiting your local library. I mean, there was literally a musical number about it. If you weren’t graced with the remarkable stylings of Marc Brown, however, you may wonder what the big hubbub is about the library, especially if you aren’t a huge fan of reading. For your convenience, reflecting on all of the time I have enjoyed as an employee and patron of various libraries, I have compiled a list of 13 reasons you should be in awe of all that your local library has to offer:

1. It’s free

As long as you keep yourself from accruing late fines, getting a library card is totally painless. In most cases, all you have to do is dedicate about three minutes to filling out a piece of paper with the information you know like the back of your hand, and then you’re free to indulge.

2. Information Exploration

Because the card is free, and most libraries don’t have a limit to the number of books you can check out, you can explore absolutely anything that interests you. Want to learn about a certain actress or animal? Grab as many books as your heart desires with no pressure to actually thumb through every page. See a novel that catches your eye? Give it a go without committing to keeping it forever. The beautiful thing is that you can try something and say no to it without any guilt or buyer's remorse.

3. ILL

Perhaps the Trump card of all local availability restrictions. Can’t find the book or movie you’ve been dying to digest? Chances are, your library offers a wonderful service called Interlibrary Loan. If this is true, the library is in connection with a whole slew of others in the region who will trade materials back and forth in order to get you the media you desire.

4. Movies and TV shows

Libraries in larger areas tend to have a pretty vast collection of up-to-date movies, documentaries and TV seasons on DVD for your viewing pleasure. You may have to wait your turn, but it beats paying to rent or own. (RIP Blockbuster)

5. Internet

Is your home internet unreliable? At a public library, you will most likely have an option of using their Wi-Fi or taking a turn at a good ol’ desktop computer for your internet-ing needs.

6. Printing/Copying

While you’re partaking in the gloriousness that is free internet, you can make prints or copies for a small fee. Why buy your own printer and go through the hassle of replacing ink and parts?

7. Nostalgia

If you spent time in libraries as a child you probably have fond memories of books and movies that you soaked up time and time again. If you’re lucky, those materials are still in circulation and can provide you with extremely heartwarming memories.

8. Friendly Staff

I may be biased, but the staff at libraries are pretty dang great. Even if you’re having a bad day, the sweet lady (or man) checking out your books is sure to give you a smile, exchange friendly words with you and turn your day around. Plus, they won’t judge you for what you’re checking out (trust me, I check out more children’s materials than a kid.)

9. Local Historical Research

There is no better place to learn about your local history than the library. Many have archives of newspapers (maybe on this crazy cool contraption called microfilm), and exclusive copies of records and yearbooks to appease interested minds.

10. Programming

Summer reading programs aren’t just for kids! Informational workshops, book clubs, crafting events and presentations of many kinds occur all year round for all ages, combining learning, exploration and a relaxed atmosphere.

11. CDs and Audiobooks

CDs are also available for checkout, sometimes venturing far from the world of classical repertoire. Audiobooks are another hidden gem if you spend a lot of time driving or would rather listen than look.

12. Art

In addition to housing books and movies on art, most libraries display original art around their building in addition to their diverse architecture.

13. Answers

Have a quick question or need a fast phone number? Step on up to the front desk or give the library a call. They will be glad to do your quick Googling for you or put in a request for further investigation.

Next time you find yourself with no money and nothing to do (shout out to every college student ever), go on an adventure to your local library and explore all it has to offer. Trust me, you won't regret it. Arthur would be so proud.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
