I am a little late on watching "13 Reasons Why," but I only watched the show to see what the hype was about. I wanted to see what everyone was freaking out about. The show was good, however, I will never be watching it again. If you haven't seen the show, here are 13 reasons why you shouldn't start.
1. The show doesn't focus on the victim.
The show focuses on another characters point of view. It tells her story, but through his eyes. If the show was ready about her, it should be through her perspective the whole time instead of just a few times.
2. It is somewhat slow.
Each episode is about an hour long. While Hannah is telling her story, it takes a while to get to the point since they are doing it through someone else's perspective.
3. Some of the scenes make you feel uncomfortable.
I often found myself looking away for some scenes due to the sensitivity of it. It was extremely hard to watch.
4. One of the reasons isn't even a reason.
This one really bothered me. She went through her story and ended it by saying he was not a reason, but deserved a tape anyway. It was basically like a shout-out where she expressed her feelings towards someone. So, there are really only 12 reasons instead of 13.
5. Some of the reasons seem as if Hannah Baker is overreacting.
When a few people tried to help Hannah, she freaked out. Some of the reasons really seemed as though she isn't strong enough to handle daily life. High school is hard, yes, but she made some situations seem bigger than they were.
6. She expected everyone to help her when she never told anyone she needed it.
For almost every person, she blamed them for how she felt and how she was mad at them for not reaching out. She never told them and just expected everyone to be there for her even when they didn't know something was wrong.
7. You'll never be able to see the actors on a different show after seeing their roles here.
A few of the actors did things that were unforgivable in the show. I saw interviews of the people after the show and kept trying to tell myself their character is not how they are in real life. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't separate the two.
8. It makes you feel extremely angry.
As I stated already, some of the actions were unforgivable and you wish you could step in and do something.
9. It will make you lose sleep.
Some episodes make you want to see what happens next (which usually turned into being a let-down). Some of the scenes, like I've said already, were uncomfortable which make you continue to think about them in the late hours of the night.
10. You won't be able to un-see the realistic scenes.
This was a big one for me. I wish I had known beforehand instead of being blindsided by what was about to happen. I'll give it to the actors though; they did an extremely good job. However, it was too realistic and hard to un-see.
11. There are too many unanswered questions.
Some of what happened didn't really make sense or have anything to do with Hannah and her story. The only way they could be answered is through a second season, but how can their be a second season if there are no more tapes? Some parts of the story were just unnecessary.
12. Its depiction of depression is unrealistic.
Depression is something that happens over time. The show made it seem like everything happened within a few weeks. Depression lasts months and doesn't just appear. She also acted "normal" and severe depression is easily seen and detected.
13. The teachers were represented inaccurately.
The show made the teachers seem as if they did not care about what happened. They also made them seem as if they were idiots and oblivious to what was going on. It was disrespectful what they did to the teachers because that's not what would have happened. The guidance counselor knew what was going on and did not report it; that would never happen.
I know; some of the reasons are what makes the show good, however, some of the scenes could have been done differently and it would have been just as good.
