Far too often we, as a society, become so ignorant to the well being of another person. We are so quick to judge someone, to speak up when someone says something we don't agree with, and to become cynical to the way the world is evolving. We become so self-absorbed in our own lives that we don't take a moment out of our days to go out of our way to do something hospitable for someone else--without something in return. It's funny. We are so full of our own pride and ego that we dare not step out of our comfort zones. There's always excuses. I mean, sure, it's so easy to be nice to someone who's nice back and who you know, however, when you're nice to someone who's maybe not so nice and who is a complete stranger, that is where the humanity of a person speaks louder than words ever can. A small or big gesture can go a long way.
1. Smile and say hello to every person you pass.
A smile may be the one thing that a person needed, especially if they are having a rough day. Be that vessel for someone. Gravitate them towards a more positive mindset. It makes you seem more approachable. A smile is the most beautiful thing you can wear after all and it's super contagious.
2. If someone is gossiping, mention something nice about the person they are talking about instead.
3. Leave a nice note on a receipt.
We may not notice the load of work someone is going through as an employee, but sure enough a simple "Thank you for your work." or "Have a lovely day." can give them the motivation they need to get through the day.
4. Hold the door open for someone.
Nowadays, we don't see this too often. Being polite and courteous does not go unnoticed. It's a part of the foundation for strong relationships. Let's bring it back.
5. Call someone you love.
When was the last time you reminded someone that you love them or that you miss them? Call them up and take them out. The fact that you thought of them makes them realize how much they mean to you.
6. Forgive someone.
People make mistakes. Forgiving isn't easy but it's a step forward in the right direction.
7. Pay for someone's bill.
Whether it be food, coffee, groceries, or even a toll, the thought counts. It give a person hope about the goodness in people and it is also such a humbling act. You may even start a chain reaction.
8. Volunteer in a nursing home.
You can make a new friend and learn something different from each elder you encounter.
9. Compliment someone.
Telling someone "I love you outfit!" or "You hair looks great today!" can seriously boost their self-esteem.10. Put loose change in an expired meter that someone is parked at.
You won't get recognized for it but that's not the point. You will save someone from the trouble.
11. Send someone a hand-written letter.
It takes more effort and is so much more personal than reading a text message off of a phone screen.
12. Send someone flowers just because.
13. Sit with a new person in class or at lunch.
You never know if a person is lonely or wants someone to talk to. Reach out to someone new, regardless of what anyone thinks.
A little goes a long way. When was the last time you performed an act of kindness?
