13 Movies Sure to Frighten And Intrigue Any Scary Movie Lover

Ghosts, monsters, aliens, murderers and psychos. What about these characters make us rush to the movie theaters, buy tickets and popcorn and watch in anxious terror the whole time? Not sure, but most of us have an addiction to scaring ourselves, whatever the reason may be. Whether it be Halloween, a new release or a night you just feel like being scared, scary movies have been a timeless classic. And even when we feel we have been scared enough, we cannot resist to scare ourselves over and over again.

Here are 13 movies every scary movie lover needs to see:

1. The Ring

This 2002 horror classic provides more than just a few jump scenes. Starting with a video tape that kills those who watch it leading to an extremely interesting plot line and a nail-biting investigation attempting to discover how/why the tape was created, this movie has you captivated from start to finish. These ultimately chilling scenes and horrifying moments will keep you up at night as this film will give you goosebumps and have you on the edge of your seat the whole time.


2. Paranormal Activity

The movie that started it all, the first of its series and unlike anything else, Paranormal Activity stunned and scared audiences all over the world. In 2007, Katie and Micah moved into a new suburban home with an obsession of videotaping every little thing. What first started as a quirky hobby quickly evolved into a horrifying revelation as they learned their was another presence in their home that seemed to be beyond human. The mother of all jump scenes, this movie is torturously suspenseful and will forever make you scared to sleep, while wondering what will happen when you're sleeping.


3. The Conjuring

Potentially one of the truly scariest movies of all time, the paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, are called to investigate an old home that has a presence that has been terrorizing Carolyn and Roger and their five daughters. Intriguing, suspenseful and horrifyingly scary. This 2013 film brought audiences screaming in theaters, closing their eyes and gritting their teeth throughout every minute. This film plays on almost every aspect of fear and is relentlessly scary from beginning to end.


4. The Sixth Sense

Don't let this movie's older age or younger rating dishearten your decision to watch this classic. The 1999 movie is not only scary, but has an insanely creepy plot and is consistently surprising you. Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist who donates almost all his time to his work, starts to see Cole, a young boy who is tormented by a problem and also by bullies. Chilling, gory and suspenseful, this film is sure to entertain and spook everyone who dares to press play.


5. Saw

Gory, grotesque, bloody and unrelenting, Saw is for anyone who loves violent horror films. Targeting ordinary men with sinful backgrounds, Jigsaw plays God and forces his prisoners to play a horrifying and painful game that ends in life or death. The only way to watch this 2004 movie is with your hands covering your eyes as no mercy is shown to those that are tormented in an abandoned building awaiting their final fate.


6. Sinister

Terror and gore go hand in hand in this horribly scary and graphic film. True crime writer, Ellison, moves into a suburban home to investigate the murders of the family that had previously lived there only to discover a web of connections, secrets and murders on a box of 8mm tapes he finds in the attic. The terror will keep you on the edge of your seat and the gore is exceptionally chilling. In 2012, this film stunned and appalled audiences everywhere with its real-life elements and terrorizing scenes of violence.


7. Se7en

Intriguing, shocking, unbelievable and suspenseful, this movie is sure to thrill you from start to finish. When a wave of crimes begin, it seems to encompass the seven deadly sins, two local detectives are forced to dig deeper than they have before to catch the killer before he continues on this spree. Violent, chilling and thrilling, you will not be disappointed with this 1995 unbelievable and unique movie.


8. Quarantine

Filmed in 2008, Quarantine takes place in a building where the residents are trapped inside, Quarantined by the government as a toxic virus has been exposed to those within. A television reporter and her cameraman are among the trapped and film the horrifying events that start to take place as the virus starts to infect the people one by one. Filled with blood, violence and unexpected horror, Quarantine is original and a definitive must see.


9. The Orphanage

Stunning and unparalleled in the realm of horror, The Orphanage is a true nail-biter. When a woman brings her family back to her childhood home, her son starts to interact with an imaginary friend. And low and behold, the home used to be an orphanage for disabled children. Although this film is Spanish with English subtitles, don't let that differ you from this truly terrifying 2007 flick. Suspense, terror and creepy little children, this flick will have you seeing orphans walking around your own home.


10. The Strangers

"Why are you doing this?" "Because you're home" This chilling line from the 2008 The Strangers is every person staying home alone's worst nightmare. Random assailants attack and terrorize a young couple in their isolated vacation home, why? Because they're home. Terrifying suspense and gore galore, The Strangers is sure to strike fear long after the movie is over, especially when you find yourself home alone.


11. Let the Right One in

Creepy and an awe-striking, this 2008 movie is guarantied to keep you interested and terrified until the end. Oskar, a bullied and lonely young boy, befriends an increasingly odd girl whose life mystifies and scares him. A truly interesting plot that will keep you on your seat and alert the whole time; this film is a must see.


12. The Fourth Kind

With a combination of dramatizations and "real life" scenes, the two viewpoints work together to create a mystery that forces every viewer to question f it is reality or not. When a large amount of disappearances occur in Alaska, all are stumped. But psychiatrist Abbey Tyler sees a pattern with her patients that lead her to question how life beyond may be interacting with them, and the different kinds of contact they may have with them. Unbelievable and too scary to keep your eyes open, this 2009 film is for any scary movie lover.


13. The Hills Have Eyes

Violent, violent, violent, violent, gore, gruesome, disturbing, chilling and terrifying. The Hills Have Eyes is not for the weak stomached or anyone who can't see blood. Every kind of brutality happens to this family who, due to car trouble, have been stranded in the desert. They are soon stalked and hunted by a group of people far from civilization that have evident physical and psychological defects. This 2006 gore fest is sure to turn stomachs and disturb audiences everywhere. Viewers beware.
