Disney Princesses

Disney Princesses are one of the biggest icons for young girls today. The thirteen Princesses teach girls about strength, love, power, and most importantly to follow your dreams. Through catchy songs and empowering dialogue, the Princesses show young girls that if they follow their hearts and stay true to themselves, anything is possible.

As we get older, we tend to forget about some of the lessons the Princesses taught us. We may start to believe less in ourselves than we did when we were younger. We start to doubt the existence of true love and stop wanting to be ourselves and follow our dreams because of the world we live in. But times like this are when we need the Disney Princesses and their wisdom the most. Here are some of my favorite quotes from each Disney Princess that can help you get through any situation.

1. “Remember, you’re the one who can fill the world with sunshine”. –Snow White

With all the scary and dark things that are happening in the world today it is easy to doubt the existence of even the smallest bit of sunshine. Snow White reminds us that we can be the sunshine in not only our world, but in the world of those around us.

2. “Well there’s one thing. They can’t order me to stop dreaming”. –Cinderella

Cinderella never let her evil stepmother or stepsisters stop her from dreaming, no matter how many orders they gave her. Cinderella teaches young girls to never stop dreaming and to always follow their hearts.

3. “They say if you dream a thing more than once it’s sure to come true”. –Aurora

Just like Cinderella, Aurora is telling young girls to follow their hearts and believe in their dreams. You never know where your dreams will take you.

4. “Oh, he’s very handsome, isn’t he?” -Ariel

Right here, in this short, simple quote, Ariel captures the emotions of every girl when they finally see the boy of their dreams. Thank you Ariel, for being so relatable for all teenage girls.

5. “People think I’m odd. So I know how it feels to be different, and I know how lonely that can be”. –Belle

Belle teaches young girls to never judge a book by its cover and to accept people for their differences. Just like Belle’s relationship with Prince Adam (the Beast), beautiful things can blossom from the most unlikely of friendships.

6. “I am not a prize to be won!” –Jasmine

Known for being the sassiest of all the Disney Princesses, Jasmine is fierce, confident, and not afraid to speak up for herself. Jasmine teaches girls to stand up for themselves and to never settle for anything less than someone who truly loves them.

7. “I don’t know what I can do. Still I know I’ve got to try.” –Pocahontas

It is true when they say that you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option. Pocahontas perfectly encompasses this concept. Whenever times get tough and you doubt your ability to pull through, always remember these words.

8. “A single grain of rice can tip the scale. One man may be the difference between victory and defeat.” -Mulan

Mulan’s strength and courage is truly admirable. She fought for her country and showed that girl’s can change the world. As we go through our lives today, it is important to remember that we have the potential to change the fate of a situation and we must always stand for what we believe in.

9. “If you do your best each and every day, good things are sure to come your way” –Tiana

Never give up. Never break down. Always try your hardest because hard work and determination always pay off in the end.

10. “Never stop dreaming.” –Rapunzel

No matter how stressed you may be, or how hopeless things may feel, never give up on your dreams. Dreams help get us through the tough situations in life and give us something to look work towards. Just like Rapunzel, it is important to work towards your dreams and never let anyone stop you.

11. “Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.” –Merida

Although bravery can be a challenge, we must each try to do the things that scare us the most. This includes looking at what our fate could be. Sometimes amazing things can come from doing the things we are afraid to do.

12. “Can I just say something crazy?” –Anna

Never be afraid to let your craziness and goofiness out. Be yourself, say what’s on your mind. Take risks. Be bold. In the end it will all pay off!

13. “Let it go” –Elsa

Not only are these the words that were stuck in everyone’s heads for most of 2013 and 2014, but they also carry an extremely powerful message. It is important not to dwell on the past, you have to keep moving forward and let go of what holds you back.

Thank you Disney Princesses for continuing to be amazing role models for girls today of all ages.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
