Even though it's still the midst of summer, with the Humboldt State semester starting on August 17, the countdown is on to make this summer count.
1. Take the Humboldt Challenge
The Humboldt Challenge is basically one of the coolest things ever. If you ever feel bored while in Humboldt county, it's bound to happen at some point, go and look at the Humboldt Challenge. It's a list of exciting activities to do in Humboldt County and is updated monthly. Score!
2. Eat a Mashed Potato Cone
One of the best secret treasures in all of Humboldt County can be be found in a waffle cone. Picture starting off your day munching away on your new favorite Mashed Potato Waffle Cone found either at the Farmer's Market on the Plaza or at the Lighthouse Grill in Trinidad. Bonus points if you finished your cone on the same day you check out Patrick's Point!
3. Patrick's Point
Patrick's Point has a beautiful beach as well as plenty of places to hike. Be certain to count on clean ocean air, a thick forest, and a view to remember. Consider maybe even camping overnight.
4. Get Crafty
One of the perks of summer is the free time. A chance to become re-energized and find your inner creativity. Paint some pottery in Eureka with the help of local business Parasol Arts. Are you 21 and up? Then consider attending Paint Night Out (the art of painting and drinking) at the Chapala Cafe. You have a local artist help show you step by step how to create a painting, all supplies are provided, and you get your drink and paint on!
5. Do Good With Pokemon Go
Pokemon Go is everywhere right now. Even in Humboldt County! And while it's great people are out you can do a little something extra while hunting for those rare Pokemon. Download the walking app Charity Miles to donate to one of thirty charities. Also, see if your local shelters could use Pokemon Go trainers to help walk some dogs! But no matter what, bring a bag and do your part to help pick up trash you encounter while on the go.
6. Explore Prairie Creek Redwoods
Home of the famous Fern Canyon, Prairie Creek Redwoods is a perfect way to spend the day for any nature lover. Depending on the amount of time you can spend, there is much more to see than just the amazing Fern Canyon. There are bike trails, beaches, and plenty of incredible wildlife including the Roosevelt Elk.
7. Watch the Sunset at the Beach
No summer is complete without a day at the beach. And luckily, in Humboldt County there are plenty of beaches to choose from. So pack up some beach towels, bring a couple of sandwiches and a frisbee and enjoy the sun while it lasts! And what is a better why to end a beach day than to watch the sunset?
8. Humboldt County Fair
Okay, there's a bit of a drive to get to Ferndale. But rest assure, the drive is not only worth it for the total change in scenery, but because the Humboldt County Fair is fun. The Fair is kicking off with with the tribute band Super Diamond on August 18th, showing self-love on the 22nd with Everything Humboldt Day, celebrating the third annual Bull-O-Rama on the 25th, and spreading the love on the 26th with Date Night.
9. Play on the Water
One of the best parts to living in Humboldt is being so close to the water. Enjoy the sea surf with paddle-boarding, surfing, and kayaking. And here's some awesome news: on July 30th there will be free water rentals from Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center from noon until 2 pm as apart of Play on the Bay.
10. Go to a Crab's Game
Chances are, if you live in Arcata you have also heard the cheers and shouts coming from a Crab's game. The season is not yet over so grab some popcorn and get ready to watch an Arcata favorite. Be sure not to miss out on the Fireworks night either!
11. Make Arcata Scoop Your New Bae
What is summer without ice cream? And a summer in Humboldt is not complete without a trip to Arcata Scoop, the cutest and tastiest ice cream place around. Scoop's flavors are made with mostly local ingredients and the flavors changed daily.12. Eat Smores at a Mad River Bonfire
Although Humboldt has plenty of beautiful beaches to chose from, one beach is the spot for bonfires. There's a good chance that when you head to the Mad River beach, several bonfires may already be waiting for you. While bonfire season really kicks off in the early school season, bonfires are as classic way to celebrate the freedom of summer. Just be sure to look out for loose nails and to clean up after your bonfire.Make This Summer One To Remember
