Since 2005, Shonda Rhimes’ hit television drama "Grey’s Anatomy" has been nailing how it feels to balance work, relationships and friendships day to day. Rhimes herself has said she chose to center the show around the original five interns because there is something terrifying about not knowing what it is you’re doing for a living. As college students, we know all too well how it feels not to know who we are or what we’re doing or why. Unlike the doctors in "Grey’s," we aren’t surviving bombs, shootings, plane crashes or ambulance explosions, but we are dealing with relationships, work, friends and stress. Shonda’s hit show is well into its 12th season now, but luckily we only have to survive four years of college. Here are 12 relatable moments from the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital that fit perfectly with the life of a tired and overworked student.
1. When you try to do everything:
Meredith Grey is exhausted from trying to pretend she isn't in love, like when you go to the Org Fair and fall in love with too many clubs and try to join them all. Are you free tonight? Tomorrow night? Any night of the week? Probably not anymore.
2. When you skip your first class:
Whether it’s to sleep in or to catch up on work, just hope your professor forgets to pass around the attendance sheet that day, and hope you end up using the free time to do something more productive than Addison Montgomery did.
3. When you have your first fight with your roommate(s):
You’re close enough to be best friends, but that means all bets are off when one of you trips over something the other left in the middle of the floor. This is why Meredith wanted to live with complete strangers.
4. When you forget to read for class:
And, as the fates would have it, it’s the day your professor announces a pop quiz to make sure everyone’s doing the readings. It probably feels a little like you're Derek Shepherd when he tried to talk down the man pointing a gun at his head. Put down the quiz. No one needs to get hurt.
5. When you’re trying to write an essay:
After procrastinating for far too long, your brain has now shut down entirely. Two sentences. Twelve hours worth of work.
6. When you go out on a limb and apply for an internship/leadership position:
At first, it’s just to see what will happen, but then you start to get invested, conveniently right before they shoot you down. At least you're not an overly invested intern, right?
7. When your parents call and ask how your grades are:
I mean, we haven’t really had any tests yet. Just a few quizzes. Mostly projects. We haven’t gotten any solid grades, and it’s still early in the semester...
8. When you pull an "all-nighter" to study:
You might show up to class the next day looking like the walking dead, but at least you’ll pass. Who needs looks when your brilliant mind will be in charge of everyone one day?
9. When you talk to that one friend who has unlimited energy:
How do you do well in your classes and participate in five clubs and do an internship and have a job and still manage to stay up to read or watch Netflix? Do you sleep? Are you human? It's not fair.
10. When you have to pay for your own living expenses:
You wanna hang out? Go to a party? Will there be free food provided? I’m in.
11. When you realize anxiety over your grades is now controlling your life:
Even when there’s no work to be done (which is hardly ever), you still worry there’s something to be done.
12. When you talk to the one person who knows just what to say:
And you can finally breathe again. At least until it all starts over again tomorrow.
