12 Thoughts College Students Have Coming Home For Summer

It's an interesting couple of years for those of us who go away to college. I remember how excited I felt my freshman year when I first moved into my dorm room. Yet at the same time I felt scared and a little out of place. It's a big transition going from living at home your whole life to finally being away on your own, but it's a transition most of us get used to. Or at least for the most part we do. It always felt weird moving coming home from college every semester, just to go away again in the fall. It's kind of like you're living two different lives for a few years. Lives in which you have two completely different sets of friends and even different responsibilities. When making the transition from the college life to being home and working, here are some thoughts most of us will probably have.

1. "I can't wait to see my pets."

The one thing we all miss the most when we are away: our furry best friends who love us unconditionally!

2. "I wonder if my parents are going to think I have changed at all."

I think we all have heard this life from our parents at one time or another when coming home: "You sure have changed." Lets just hope they mean for the better and not the worst.

3. "I wonder what my siblings/parents did with my room while I was gone."

I think most of our parents have joked around one time or another about turning your room into a man cave or into something else when we went away to college. For those who have younger siblings, they have probably laid eyes on your room as well.

4. "What am I going to do for work this summer?"

Some of us are lucky enough to have a job lined up for us every summer while others have to go on an extended search when they come home every year.

5. "Man, it feels good to finally eat real food again."

Although the dining hall is all you can eat, most of us become tired of eating the same old food all the time. Nothing beats mom's home cooking. It's also nice to have a kitchen with supplies in it, for those who love to cook for themselves too.

6. "I wonder who I'm going to hang out with when I'm home."

Many of us have probably lost contact with a lot of the people who we were friends with in high school. It gets difficult maintaining friendships at a distance and when you're home you sometimes wonder if it's going to be easy to pick up right where you left off.

7. "Yeah! I can finally shower without having to wear flip flops!"

Showers at home are so much better. You are in your own private bathroom and not in a public one where the person next to you will blast loud music, sing or worse -- leave their hair in the drain. Plus there is finally enough hot water!

8. "It's kind of nice driving to places."

Not all schools allow freshman or even sophomores to bring cars, so there are many students who just don't drive during the school year. Even when you do have a car on campus, everything is right at your disposal so driving doesn't happen often. It's sort of nice having to drive to places again. It's that quite time of solidarity you get to either think about your day or catch of on radio's latest top hits.

9. "I don't have to worry about getting my laundry taken!"

When a building with 400+ students are sharing five washing machines, things can get little messy in the laundry room. Whether it's someone taking your laundry out of the dryer before it is actually dry or even dragging your laundry down the stairs to realize that every washer is full, it is nice to not have to worry about that stuff while at home.

10. "I can't wait to travel this summer!"

The one great thing about summer is that it allows us to travel. In college, classes happen whether you are there or not so it makes it hard to schedule time during the school year to go on adventures. During the summer though when you are at work it gets easier to schedule time off to do the things you want.

11. "When are my professors going to put their final grades in?!"

It's the one thing that drives us all crazy after finals week, probably because most of us think we did worse than we actually do. It also makes us realize that professors procrastinate as well.

12. "When I come back next semester I'm going to achieve it all!"

It's nice having a 3 month break between semesters too. It makes you feel refreshed and ready to conquer anything when you come back in the fall.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
