Whether the race is a local 5K or a full on marathon, runners put in hours of preparation. For months leading up to the race, a runner makes their running trail their second home. Even with all the physical preparation, nothing can prepare a runner for the emotional roller coaster that they go through during a race. Here are some of the many thoughts that a runner has during a race.
1. Should I have had more to eat? More to drink? Wow, her gear is so much fancier than mine. They are probably so much faster. Can’t we just start already? I just want to get to the finish line.
2. I feel great. I am so happy that I trained as hard as I did. I hope I did not go out too fast.
3. This playlist is helping me enjoy this run. Thank you Beyoncé!
4. I am passing so many people. I am so proud of myself. I am doing great!
5. I have to pee. Where are the Porta Potty’s? Why do I have the world’s smallest bladder?
6. I am so thirsty but I do not want a cramp. I should just invest in a Camelback so I do not have to worry in between water stations. Oh wait, I see one. I will be OK.
7. This is starting to hurt. I am never running again. Ever.
8. Just as I thought that this could not get any more painful, a hill appears.
9. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
10. “You run better than the government.” Ha, these signs are so clever. It is so nice that these people took the time to make these posters. I am feeling motivated.
11. One more mile to go. I can do this. I am almost there. In less than 10 minutes, I never have to run again.
12. I did it! I finished! I am done! That was one of the most rewarding experiences. Everyone should be a runner. Now I can eat whatever I want as a reward for what I just accomplished. Oh, time to take a picture with my medal. What Instagram caption should I use? Oh, I need to get home and eat my body weight in carbs. I did it!
