Some kids grew up playing sports; some kids grew up playing an instrument.
But me? I grew up as a theater geek.
Musicals were not just something I loved watching- they were something I enjoyed taking part in. I loved getting to take on different characters and telling a story to an audience. The moment I hit the stage, everything else became irrelevant. I was transported to a different place where I could be a different person, and I am the person I am today because I was a theater kid.
Here are 12 signs you grew up a theater kid.
1. You spell it "theatre," not theater, and you roll your eyes when people tell you that's not the way to spell it.
Musical "theater" just does not look right, OK?
2. The phrase, "I can't, I have rehearsal," speaks to you on an astronomical level.
Here's to all of the parties and hangouts I missed because I was at rehearsal for hours on end and then had so much homework to catch up on.
3. Your iPod was filled (and is probably still filled) with soundtracks from various musicals.
Not gonna lie, I still jam to "Wicked" and "Spring Awakening" on a daily basis, and I fall more in love with them each time.
4. You still have pictures of yourself in some interesting costumes.
Because how else would I prove to people that I was Glinda in "Wicked"?
5. Going to see a Broadway show was a gift from above.
Not
only did you get to go into the city for a night on the town, but also you got to see a Broadway show on Broadway and there is nothing better than that.
6. "Circle" was a sacred place.
And senior circle was the saddest moment of your high school life, obviously.
7. You randomly burst into song and dance.
The only thing you're missing is the elaborate costume and wig.
8. The amount of merchandise you have from shows you've seen / been in is insane.
We all know the best part of getting cast merchandise was getting to put
your role or nickname on your sweatshirt. And you can't go to see a
show without getting a T-shirt or program...or both.
9. You probably have playbills or posters from various shows on your bedroom walls.
Bonus points if you have some that are signed! (And yes, this is my wall. It took a long time to set up, but it was so worth it!)
10. You have definitely practiced your Tony's acceptance speech at least once...or 100 times.
And you're hoping Neil Patrick Harris hosts the Tony Awards that you attend.
11. Tech week is on the same level as finals week.
There's a reason why "tech week" is also known as 'hell week' in the theater world.
12. You know you wouldn't be who you are today had you not grown up having a life that revolved around theater.
You have been changed for good, and you know it.
