Type 1 Diabetes is a life quite different from anything else. Sometimes you might think you're the only one who understands the language of it all. But have no fear! Here are 10 signs you've got the 'betes.
1. You constantly have to explain the difference between Type 1 and 2.
"Why aren't you fat?" "Isn't insulin a cure?" These questions agonize you.
2. JDRF and ADA are you're favorite organizations.
You're constantly raising awareness about what you battle everyday. JDRF and the American Diabetes Association are amazing in your heart.
3. Nick Jonas.
We all have "A Little Bit Longer" on our iPhones. If Nick Jonas could rock T1D, we can too right?! #DiabeticIdol
4. 4. Getting excited when you receive a new medical product.
A new clip for your pump? A new meter? A new pump? A new CGM? You are all over that stuff.
5. Downing juice boxes like no other.
When your blood sugar drops below 70 mg/dl, you are in a rush. You are trained to chug juice faster than anyone you know. You can now no longer drink it any other way.
6. The awkwardness of publicly saying "I'm high."
There's just no getting around it.
7. Dreading getting your new A1C.
Really hoping the two weeks you were good before your endo visit made a difference.
8. Being afraid of needles despite the daily use.
Below is my reaction to getting the flu shot every year.
9. Being stared at during every diabetes related commercial.
Oh, right. I am diabetic. You know I've seen this commercial like 10 times already? And no, I don't need diabetic socks or cream, thanks for asking.
10. Free food.
I am going to eat all of the sugar-free Jello I want. Why? Because I can.
11. Bolusing before every meal
Can I just eat this like a normal person, please? Too much math to handle.
10. Having a team in your honor for a JDRF Walk.
Your picture from seventh grade is awkwardly on the backs of people's shirts, and you don't know how you feel about it. Also, trying to rack up donations and not knowing how to approach it.
11. Growing up faster than everyone else.
All of your friends got to eat birthday cake and all of the other delicious foods they wanted to, when they wanted to. You had to grow up and manage your life when everyone else had no worries. You mind is on your diabetes 24/7, and you had to get strong fast.
12. Being your own ambassador.
You are one of the strongest people you know, and you have no shame in saying that. Go you, for battling T1D every day. Through all the highs and lows, you're awesome and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Go rock the 'betes.
