We have a lot of different kinds of friendships throughout our lives, some good and some bad. In my four years of college, I have come to learn that the people who will be there for you, like really be there for you when you need them, are the people who have been by your side all along.
This is not to say that the friends you make in college or your career are not good friends or won't be your friends for life. I have some friends I made in college who, I'm sure, will be some of my best friends for a long time.
What I'm saying, however, is that we need to appreciate those few friends we grew up with, who helped shape us into the people we are today, and who we depend on for support because we know that no matter what, we will always be there for each other.
1. They've seen you grow from a kid into a young adult.
These few friends have been with you since the beginning. They stuck by your side through your awkward teenage phases and love you even more now because of it.
2. They know all of your flaws.
From obsessing over your crush to your Netflix addiction, these friends have seen the good, the bad and the ugly.
3. And still love you regardless.
After so many years together, nothing you do could scare these friends away.
4. You are basically a part of their family and vice versa.
While normal friends knock before walking in their friends' house, you just walk right in yelling "Honey, I'm home!" In the words of one of my best friends Katie, "My mom just says she has another daughter."
5. No matter how far away you live from one another, you still talk on a regular basis.
Group text messages become a regular thing between you and these friends, consisting of every little thing that happens throughout their days.
6. And when you finally see each other, it's like nothing ever changed.
You fall back into the same routine of getting together, going out to bars or just talking all night at one another's houses.
7. When something big happens in your life, they are the first ones you call.
You have, have, HAVE to tell them immediately about anything big that happens because you know they will be the most excited for you.
8. And when something bad happens, you know they'll be there for you ready to kick whoever's ass that made you sad.
"Alright, who do I have to kill today," becomes a regular reaction to your friends' tears.
9. Conversations usually consist of nothing but inside jokes.
Lingo remembered from nights out and hysterical memories that outsiders just don't understand.
10. You fight like an old married couple (which you basically are).
You're around each other so much that you are bound to get on each other's nerves, and when you argue, it's not always a mature conversation.
11. But no matter how bad the fight, you are never worried you will lose them as a friend.
You have been through WAY too much together and know WAY too much about each other to ever not be friends, so it looks like you are stuck together.
12. Because they are not only your best friends, they are your cheerleaders, support system and the loves of your life, and you can't imagine a life without them.
