In the year of 2012, I was in the eighth grade. While most people's middle school days were filled with embarrassment, puberty, and bad haircuts, mine were the best years of my life. Yes, I peaked in middle school. I roamed the hallways in my skimpy black pencil skirt with my straightened blonde hair, and I felt on top of the world. Although my pre-teen glory might contribute to my bias, I am 100%, wholeheartedly, undoubtedly convinced that 2012 was the best year ever, and here is why...
1. KONY 2012
Was it a hoax? Was it the revolution of a lifetime? Up for debate. I'm not going to tell you what I think, but I will say that I wasn't not apart of the invisible children club at my school. But no matter what you think, you can't overlook the fact that every privileged girl in your school thought that they could save the world by buying the full bracelet package online with their parent's credit card. It is actually pretty incredible how easy it was to convince people to put up a few posters. Oh how I miss the days when people didn't fact check the internet.
2. London Summer Olympics
Who doesn't love an Olympic year? And no, I'm not talking about the winter Olympics because if we're being real, nobody really gives a shit. Missy Franklin, Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte (can you tell I'm a swimmer?), the fab 5 gymnastics team. I'm sure other cool stuff happened too but really the only thing I remember is One Direction's performance during the opening ceremonies. But all in all, the Olympics are always a fun way for us to pretend we care about our country and I would say that is just the cherry on top of the decedent sundae that was the year of 2012.
3. Barack Obama re-election
Maybe this wasn't great in everybody's opinion, but let's be real here... Obama was the fricken' best. I'm not going to get into it, but I miss you Obama and you know that you miss him too!
4. Call Me Maybe
Here's my number Carly Rae Jepsen (1-800-2012). What would your life even be without this song? Whether you love this song or hate this song (I don't think that there is an in between) it is ICONIC! It is basically the better version of Rebecca Black's "Friday" (released in 2011 obviously). If this song came on right now, would you skip it? I bet you $20.12 that if you were by yourself, you wouldn't... just saying.
5. Fifty Shades of Grey
Fifty Shades of Grey was the top selling book of 2012. Yes, it was the year that all of our mothers decided it was totally socially acceptable to read porn in public. My mom did it, your mom did it. It is pretty much disgusting but whatever floats your boat I guess?
6. The Hunger Games
I'm just putting it out there. Not the best, not the worst. I would personally say that it was an attribute. I went to the premiere. I made a shirt. I wore my hair in a side braid.
7. Gangnam Style
I'm literally not even going to say anything for this one. I mean COME ON!
8. Taylor Swift Red album
Taylor Swift released her first non-country album and began the spiral into despair that we have watched ever since. Didn't we all want it to happen? Nobody really liked her and 2012 finally gave us a reason to tear her apart.
9. YOLO
If I could only live once, I would choose to live in the year 2012. My favorite part about this saying is its versatility. Use it as a verb, as a noun, as an adjective, whatever your heart desires! The only thing that has even come close to YOLO is yeet and come on guys, it's just not the same...
10. THE WORLD WAS GOING TO END
Let's just think about this one for a second. The world was LITERALLY supposed to end. So first of all, thanks for not ending, that's pretty cool. Second of all, that is INSANE. This pretty much sums up the beautiful roller coaster of 2012. Every day we go about our lives and we don't even think about it. But on the eve of December 21st, 2012, EVERYBODY THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO DIE!! Odd.
Ok, so I lied, I can only think of 10. But you try to make a longer list for another year, I dare you! Basically, I don't care what you think (please don't leave your comments). And no, I'm not going to change the title because it's catchy the way that it is! 2012 is unbeatable and I make a wish each and every day to return to its magnificence. #yolo
