As painful and emotionally scarring getting pinned down and farted on every day after school is, having a big brother has been one of the best things in my life. He might mentally or physically abuse you here and there, but no one has your back like an older bro. Without him I would not know what a Hail Mary pass was or how to stand up for myself, so I guess I owe him a couple thank yous here and there. There are many reasons why having an older brother is the best but here’s a few.

1. He taught you to defend yourself

He taught you at a young age how to swing a punch and you learned from his constant torture how to duck and run. You may have always hated him pushing you around but know if anyone tried to fight you, you know exactly what to do.

2. You know enough about sports to fake it and impress boys

The years and years of being dragged to his hockey, football, and lacrosse games finally paid off when you impressed your crush because you could name more players on the team than he could. Thanks for that one bro.

3. You have a slightly better understanding of boys and why they do the things they do

Who in the world understands what boys are thinking, am I right? Having an older brother gives you an up close and personal look at the way boys think and act. Having a brother will help you later with boys and will give you hope that the good ones are really out there. You got a front row ticket to understanding them so don’t waste it.

4. He made you tough, mentally and physically

From the years and years of demining names, teasing, tripping, and pushing you all the way down they stairs, you can handle a lot. You formed some thick skin from all the jokes he threw at you. It may have sucked at the time but know when nothing hurts you anymore and you can easily stick up for yourself, you look back at the years of torture with a smile.

5. He will always protect you no matter what

Any boy you bring home will know to treat you right from just one little talk with your older brother. He will protect you from all the bad boys in the world and no one, no one, will ever lay a hand on you that is for sure.

6. You got your sense of humor from him

You friends have always loved your humor and witty jokes and most of them you owe to him. He taught you the dirty jokes before any of your friends knew them and for that you will always thank him.

7. You have an entire closet of oversized hoodies to steal

Nothing is better than wearing a boy’s sweatshirt and sweat pants, that’s a scientifically proven fact I’m pretty sure. With an older brother they come in endless supply. He will never truly know where his lacrosse hoodie went back in high school, whoops.

8. He acts tough, but he will always be a shoulder to cry on

As much as he teases you, every older brother has a soft spot for his little sister. Seeing you in tears breaks his heart, trust me. He will act like he doesn’t care but when it comes down to it he will always be there to dry your tears and give you some of the best advice you will ever get.

9. You have a ton of older boys to protect you because all of his friends see you as a little sister too

All his friends view you as a little sister, mostly because you annoy them just as much as you annoy your brother. But they are always quick to protect you when he’s not around. Having one older brother really means having a whole flock of them; it’s just how it goes.

10. He taught you what was cool and what wasn't

Back when you were in middle school you knew all the ins and outs of high school, all because of him. He taught you older cool things your friends didn’t know and you had a leg up on everyone going into high school. You knew the high school slang long before walking through those doors.

11. He will never rat you out to your parents, mostly because you have more dirt on him anyway

“If you tell mom that I’ll tell her about the time you…” that’s the only sentence younger sisters really need to know. You can get away with a lot and he will always without a doubt cover for you because you know all about what he did when he was in high school. Secrets will always be safe between the two of you.

12. He will always have your back, keep you in check, and love you forever cause you're his cute little sis

As I said big brothers will always have an undeniable soft spot for their baby sisters. He may tease you, he may punch you, he may tell you he hates you, but your one of his favorite people and he would do anything for you. He will always, always look out for you; he will always love his little sis no matter what.

Through all the beatings you took, all the mean nicknames, and all the jokes he pulled on you, you still love your older brother and owe him a lot. They are hard to live with, but they really are the best. I know I wouldn’t be who I am today without my big bro.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
