12 Monuments To Miss After Studying Abroad In Florence, Italy

Between the historic landmarks, the beautiful art, and the great Italian food, there are so many places to miss from being abroad in Florence, Italy. There is something about the cute little city that just makes you feel at home.

After being able to call it home for a full semester, it is hard to not think about the views and our favorite places to stop for coffee and gelato. While Florence may not be home anymore, it will always have a special place in our hearts.

Between the shopping markets and the incredible views, there are so many monuments to miss in Florence:

1. Piazzale Michelangelo.

The amazing views at the top are worth the many stairs it takes to get to the top.

2. The Duomo.

It's hard not to miss passing the famous Duomo Cathedral every day on the way to class.

3. The endless restaurant possibilities for amazing Italian food.

The food in Florence was to die for. Between the traditional pizza from Gusta Pizza to the pear ravioli from Trattoria 4 Leoni, the restaurants are surely ones I won't forget.

4. And the gelato.

Amazing.

5. Piazza Della Repubblica.

It's hard to forget about the iconic carousel in the middle of the piazza.

6. San Lorenzo Leather Market.

Bargaining with the vendors and looking at all the bags, belts and just about everything leather was all part of the fun.

7. And of course the Central Market.

Where you could get just about any fruit, vegetable or spice that you could think of.

8. Santa Maria Novella Train Station.

After leaving from Santa Maria Novella for almost every trip you went on, it's a hard place to forget about.

9. Piazza Santa Croce.

The Basilica of Santa Croce is another church we tended to pass almost every day whether it was on our way to class or on the way home from the Red Garter Karaoke Bar.

10. The museums.

From the famous Uffizi Art Gallery to the David statue in the Accaddemia to the Gucci museum, there was so much to learn about.

11. The Ponte Vecchio.

The famous bridge over the Arno River which was filled with shops and tourists all day long is sure one I won't forget.

12. The Boboli Gardens.

Another place to miss with beautiful views of the city.

The pictures we have from Florence simply do not do the place justice. It was an incredible place to call home and I cannot wait to go back.

Ciao for now, Firenze.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
