It's the end of April, which means finals are quickly approaching. In this potentially stressful time, it can be easy to get caught up in the tests, assignments, and papers being thrown around and forget to take care of ourselves. In anticipation of this, I've compiled a list of some tips and ways to make sure you remain a priority in your life, despite everything else going on. Even if you just take one or two of these things on the list to apply to your life, I promise it'll make all the difference.
1. Sleep
I put this one first because it seems that when life gets hectic, sleep is the first thing that goes. But getting enough sleep each night is crucial to ensure you are ready for whatever the next day entails. If you're feeling unproductive or stressed, it might be better to go to bed an hour earlier, rather than spend another hour stressing out or not getting anything done. It'll give your body a reboot so you're ready for the next day.
2. Exercise
I know for me, I instantly feel more alive and powerful once I've worked out. Exercise is not only good for your body, but gives your mind a rest and chance to reset. If you're trying way #1 (sleep) I just mentioned, and don't want to get up early, you can always use your workout as study break!
3. Journaling
Recently, I've been taking time at the end of the day to sit down and do a stream of consciousness for a little bit. Even if you just journal for a few minutes, it can be a really healthy way to release your feelings and let things go on paper.
4. Meditation
As someone who normally meditates on a daily basis, I can say that taking the time either right after you wake up, or before you go to sleep, to sit and ground yourself has a deep impact on the way the rest of your day goes or the way you sleep. Meditation can allow you to feel centered and ready to take on the world.
5. Spending time in nature
I am currently writing this article outside because it is so beautiful out. I've always found the outdoors, especially the sunshine and light, to instantly make me feel better and more connected. If you're feeling stressed, maybe take some time to go outside, whether it be simply doing work or taking a walk.
6. Pamper Yourself
Whether it be a face mask or doing your nails, doing something to make your body feel loved and cared for can make all the difference. Sometimes we just need to take sometime to make ourselves feel pampered.
7. Eat Mindfully
With everything going on, it is important to make sure you are filling body with foods it loves and will make you feel good about yourself. So yes, take an extra salad or fruit at dinner, you and your body will feel more alive and well nourished.
8. Read
This can come in many forms. When I say read, I don't just mean novels, because that might not be your thing. Read articles, magazines, anything that interests you and gives you a chance to, like exercise does, give your mind a break.
9. Spend time doing something you love
I leave this one so broad because this can vary for so many people. For me, singing instantly makes me feel better, but for you it might be taking a hike or having a dance party. Whatever it might be, cut some time out of your day to do something that makes you happy.
10. Spend time with your loved ones
Spending time with people you love and care about and people who love and support you is a great way to make sure you yourself feel cared for. In times of busyness, it's especially important to make sure you're surrounding yourself with people who make you feel like your best self.
11. Treat Yo Self
Need I say more?
Readers, always remember that making sure your body, mind, and soul are taken care of should be your utmost priority, no matter what else is going on. I hope you'll take some time to practice some of the things on this list, or make up your own.
