This is the year that will always be remembered as the year Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar for his role in the movie "The Revenant." It took a lot of hard work, but the results were clearly satisfying. The character he played went through grueling situation after situation, but came out successful though the odds seemed against him. After months of hard work, the spring semester is coming to a close for college students, and it is time for us to gather our own results. While we may not be in the exact same situation as DiCaprio’s character, Hugh Glass, there are definitely some similarities. Here are 11:
1. Collecting Pelts
The movie begins with the fur trading crew organizing their massive amount of collected pelts. They spent months gathering them and were ready to turn it all in to get their money. Likewise, students have been gathering knowledge from their classes all semester and are preparing for their final projects along with their finals.
2. The Surprise Attack
However, just as the fur traders are taken by surprise when a band of Native Americans attack, college students are broadsided by the last few weeks of school. So many projects begin to accumulate into one week's worth of due dates, and this is when you find that you might not have been as prepared as you should have been. Whoops.
3. The Bear
After they escape, the men begin to rest. They’ve lost a lot of fur now and they are afraid of what’s next. They are tired, stressed, and grumpy, much like college students after a week’s worth of tests, papers, projects, and presentations. They don’t have much time to rest, however. Especially not Glass. He decides to go on and hunt so that he can feed his friends. As he is out hunting, he sees two baby bears. He then turns to see a great foe: his final paper--wait no, it’s a mother bear. They are two very similar things. Glass is an experienced outdoorsman, but he is still unprepared to take on this bear. Often students (myself included) believe they are ready for a final project, but they end up unprepared and frantically doing whatever they can to get it done. While they may finish the paper, it will leave them exhausted and devastated, much like the bear did to Glass.
4. Being Buried Alive
In the movie, Glass is buried alive by Fitzgerald, a man who becomes his enemy after he is attacked by the bear. As the stress rises throughout the weekend, it can really feel like you’re being buried in a shallow grave of information you thought you would have remembered when the semester began. Wrong again, past you.
5. Rising from the Grave
However, Glass rose from this shallow grave and crawled out despite his injuries. He knew that he had to walk back to his camp that was many miles away so that he could finish his task of getting revenge. In a similar way, students know that they cannot succumb to the stress or lethargy, so they too must rise up to take their finals and finish what they started. This is just the beginning, however. There are much worse challenges to come.
6. Cauterizing Your Throat
After walking for a long while, Glass realizes that he has to put gunpowder in his throat and light it so that he can heal. It is something he can barely do, and it takes every bit of will he has to follow through with the act. This is the equivalent of the late nights when you would love to do nothing more than to sleep, but you know there is still so much left to study. When your eyes get heavy and your head starts drooping, you know you have to fight it so that you can pass your tests. Luckily that next cup of coffee tastes better than an explosion in your throat.
7. Sleeping in a Horse
There will need to be time to sleep, and you know that. Most of the time it's scheduled through sequences of alarms, but it can also be unplanned. Hugh Glass cut open a horse and slept in it when he needed to stay warm for the night. College students also find some unique spots to sleep. I’ve seen several asleep in hallways, at their desks, and one extreme case of a boy asleep on his longboard. But hey, when you’re desperate, you’re desperate.
8. Eating a Raw Bison’s Liver
It’s three in the morning and you’ve been studying for hours on end. You’ve been running low on snacks, and you’re so hungry you’d eat anything- even a raw bison’s liver like your boy Glass. Maybe not, even though I’m sure it’s filled with protein and healthy stuff. Those Oreos are better for the soul anyway.
9. Seeing Your Friends Again
Glass managed to walk all the way back to his old camp in the end and is reunited with those that he had not seen in a while. I imagine Glass was extremely happy to just be in the company of those who understood and cared for him. In the same way, seeing friends after a final is always a relief. They’re there for you throughout all the traumatic experiences and really help snap you back into reality.
10. The Final Battle
And now only one final stands between you and summer break. Everything you’ve done, all the suffering, and that 4.0 semester GPA (or 2.5, whatever works) you’ve been shooting for will finally pay off. But it won’t be easy. All your energy is spent and motivation is at an all-time high. Luckily, you get that final surge to fight through like Glass, who manages to defeat his final foe in a gruesome battle.
11. Living to See Another Day
Finally, the semester is at a close and it’s time to drive home and get some well-earned rest. I’m sure Glass was thankful for a bed as well, though it was probably hard to be too gracious to the men that left him with a man that wanted him dead since the beginning. Either way, his journey and your journey are done now. Until next semester, that is.
Good luck on finals and watch out for bears!
