Having friends who are younger than you is great. You get to spout your wise words of wisdom whenever they have a problem you’ve actually been in while simultaneously corrupting their minds with all of your knowledge. However, being the older friend is essentially being the mom of the friend group. You have to make sure everyone is doing what he or she should be doing, while trying not to be too controlling. So in short, here are 11 ways you’re actually a mom to your friends!
1. You give a lot of hugs!
Whether you haven’t seen them in a few hours, they’re having a bad day, or you just want to show how proud you are, giving your friends a lot of hugs is very “mom.” It cheers them up and makes them feel loved, everything a mom wants to make her kids feel.
2. You're always there for them!
Just like any good mom would do, make sure you’re always there for your kids, from every heartbreak to fashion emergency. They’re always there for you when you need them, so give them back the love.
3. You offer food or snacks.
No hang-out is complete without snacks, and as the mom of the friend group, it’s your job to supply them! Even if you all just ate a large pizza, offering cookies or drinks never hurts!
4. You dress like a mom.
If you are going to fully accept your mom-ness, you have to dress the part! For me, that means high waisted jeans with a t-shirt tucked in or a nice pair of short overalls. These outfits scream “mom” but are still up-to-date on the latest trends.
5. You get excited for them!
Support your friends! By going to their school events to being happy about their latest award, it shows how much you care about them, which is something a mom would so do.
6. You give them cute nicknames!
For me personally, I call all of my friends “hun,” just to show my love for them. Creating cute nicknames for your friends is very mom-esque, and you should be proud of your mom-ness.
7. You're the designated driver.
Just like a mom, you are the go-to driver. Whether it’s short trips to the mall or driving around the state looking for the perfect dress, you always come prepared with an extra pair of sunglasses and bottles of water.
8. You scold them at times.
Every once and a while, your friends might slip up. But like a mom, make sure they know you still love them and that you’ll support them through all the choices they make, good or bad.
9. You help them with school stuff!
Coming home from college when your friends are still in school means you get to help them with all of their schoolwork and college questions. From editing their senior presentation speeches to emailing advisors about classes, you step into the role of the mom, helping them through every step of the process.
10. You try to keep up with all the high school drama.
Since you are no longer seeing your friends every day in school, you must rely on your friend group chat to hear about all the high school gossip. Just make sure you don’t go too mom and end up like Amy Poehler in "Mean Girls."
11. You let them know how much you love them.
Whether it’s buying them tea when they’re stressed or helping them with homework, try and be the best mom/friend you can be. It’s never a bad thing to care too much about your younger friends, and being the mom of the group has its positives!
