Being a transfer student at the University of Maryland is very interesting, no matter which college/university you transferred from. From the very first day, you are invited to an entirely new culture that is UMD. You experience so many changes unique to each individual. I’ve met many transfer students and I’ve learned so many different experiences. However, there are many thoughts almost every transfer that I’ve met has had.
1. Students actually worship Testudo.
The first time you saw people leaving Testudo offerings was probably the most bizarre experience ever. You knew Maryland Pride was big, but not to that extent.
2. Wait, how much is tuition again?
*Finds out* …oh
3. That advisor didn’t help me at all.
You went through orientation once already. Let’s be honest, the second time was much worse. After learning how the school works, you were probably still left with a million questions.
4. What if I made the wrong decision?
Orientation didn’t go so well and the adjustment period was even worse. You probably wondered if it was even a good decision. But like every proud Terrapin, you’re fighting your way through!
5. Why is there so much walking?
It’s likely that your previous school didn’t have this much walking. That myth of taking an Uber to class may not be a myth after all.
6. After speaking to my advisor, I realized I’m not graduating until I’m 30.
We all know how selective UMD can be. After looking at some things, you may realize that all your credits may not have transferred. Now you’re just hoping that you don’t have to take [dreadful class here] again.
... or maybe you just stepped here
7. Where do people even buy these hammocks?
When the sun's out in Maryland, everyone brings out their blankets, picnic stuff, and…hammocks. They are everywhere — let’s be honest, you’re probably thinking of making the investment yourself!
8. How do I make friends?
The school is so big and it may get a little lonely. The thought of learning how to make friends may creep in once or twice.
9. The class I thought was going to be the easiest turned out to be my hardest.
There 200 level courses, 300, 400, etc. But let’s be honest, sometimes a 400 level turns out to be easier than that 200 level one.
10. Where can I get good food?
You’ve heard the myths about how awful diner food is, so what does that leave you to choose from? Oh yeah, all of Route 1.
11. I think I may actually like this place.
Even though transferring may be a pain sometimes, you realized it wasn’t that bad after all. Maryland may actually be a new home. All it took was some adjustment!
