Having an unusual name comes with a lot of day to day burdens that people with normal names will never understand. Some were fortunate to be given names like Sarah, Emily, or James; names that are never misspelled or misunderstood. Others of us are stuck with more unique names, and if you are one of us, here are some things you definitely know to be true.
1. Starbucks is the worst, so is Panera, and basically any place that asks for your name when you order.
There is always that brief moment of panic when the barista asks you for your name because you know it's gonna take a while.
2. Chances are you have picked up the habit of spelling out your name for people.
"Uh, Larkin. L-A-R-K-I-N."
3. Or you have a go-to fake name to give out.
Whether it's Oprah, Kanye, Trump, or something much more normal and easier to understand -- like Kate -- they're all understood easier than your actual name.
4. Even when you spell it out, the spelling of your name still gets butchered.
Somehow people still don't understand and end up spelling Larkin with a G, or Sloane with an M.
5. You always dread the first day of class.
You can always tell when they have gotten to your name because they get a confused look on their face. The kind thing to do it just raise your hand and say your name before they embarrass themselves and before they butcher it.
6. When you first introduce yourself the usual response is, “What?”
People normally seem confused when they first hear your name and need you to repeat it to make sure they heard your correctly
7. There’s that one normal name that people always think is your name.
Mine is normal: Lauren, Logan, and even Morgan.
8. After you’ve said your name five times, you will eventually just say yes to a more normal name.
Then the problem is that you never respond to you new name.
9. You probably have your name written on a note in your phone with nothing else so you can have people read it in noisy places.
Taking time to unlock your phone and find that note in your phone with your name on in it is a lot easier than screaming your name over and over with the hopes that they'll eventually understand.
10. You have seriously considered wearing a name tag to parties where you don't know a lot of people.
Wearing a name tag, although it might ruin your outfit, is a whole lot easier than repeating your name 100 times throughout the night.
11. You felt the constant heartbreak of never finding your name on one of these keychains.
Knowing your name wasn't there never stopped you from looking though, though. It always pained you when you say weird-ass names like Beatriz but never your own.
