Everyone who has ever taken an Uber has had at least one awkward or unusual encounter. There are the good, the bad and the ugly. People, however, tend to talk only about the bad experiences. Here are 11 things everyone looks for in an Uber driver.
1. They make conversation
Which, without it, that 20-minute ride can be a little awkward. The best Uber drivers have tons of great stories to share.
2. But at the same time, they don't force it
Sometimes, you just don't feel like talking. The best drivers are the ones who offer conversation, but don't force you to talk. Bonus points to the drivers who compliment you when you're dressed up. That literally makes my whole day.
3. They don't awkwardly butt into your conversation
Talking about the cute guy you saw at the club can be incredibly more awkward when your Uber driver is involved. Special shoutout to those drivers who hear some of the strangest conversations in the world and don't ever question their passengers. You're probably better off anyway.
4. They give you candy
Because free candy. Because of course broke college students love free stuff—especially free candy.
5. They have a charger for your phone
The day my Uber driver me offered me a phone charger after I mentioned that my phone had died to my friend was probably the best day of my life.
6. They are a quality DJ
If you play good music, then we can be best friends. No kidding, I love Uber drivers that I share taste in music with.
7. They have a great sense of direction
I once had an Uber driver who went around the same block twice because she did not know where she was going. I've also had amazing Uber drivers who didn't even need to use their GPS.
8. Their car smells good
Any Uber that has a little cardboard tree cut out or any clip on vent air freshener is a win in my book. Stepping into one of those Ubers is a breath of fresh air. Especially if the scent is "Island Fresh."
9. Their car is clean
A clean car is a happy car. A clutter-free area is super relaxing. Any Uber driver who drives a clean car is guaranteed to be less stressed and more relaxed than a driver with a cluttered car.
10. They are a safe and non-reckless driver
If you've ever been in a car with a reckless driver, you know how frightening of a situation it can be. Uber drivers who make you feel safe and taken care of should get serious brownie points (and raises).
11. They get you to your location in a timely manner.
Now obviously, your Uber driver cannot control the traffic. Take that into consideration when you get into an Uber and are in a rush. Uber drivers have to deal with traffic and road rage from other drivers all day. Special props to them for dealing with grumpy people yet still getting their next customers to their desired location on time.
The next time you get a great Uber driver, remember to be extra grateful. Take the time to give them a high rating and to show them you appreciate their service. And when you get a bad one? Well, just remember that bad Uber drivers are few and far between. And next time, you'll be sure to get a quality Uber driver.
