After working as a barista for two years, I've noticed that the customer isn't always right. Sometimes customers, while they may have the right intentions, don't have the full knowledge or have a lack of experience.
This often can lead to mistakes. As baristas, we have learned how to navigate these mistakes, so that less happen. I decided to indulge in a bit of talk therapy with my fellow baristas. We discussed things customers do that simply grinds our beans (pun intended).

Here are 11 things that your local barista doesn't want to hear you say.
1. "Oh. I wanted that blended, sorry."
2. Barista: "I have a large iced mocha." Customer: "Oh, actually, I ordered a small latte." Barista: "That one is not yours."
3. Barista: "Hi, how are you today?" Customer: "Large coffee please."
4. When there is a line out the door: "Can I have a glass of water?"
This is worsened when they only take two sips then throw the full cup of liquid in the trash.
5. “Can I get a mocha latte?”
There is no such thing in true coffee terms. A mocha has chocolate and whip. A latte has froth and no chocolate or whip.
6. As the drink is almost finished: “Oh, can you make that decaf?"
I'm not the decaf wizard. I can't just magically transform your drink into decaf.
7. "How long is the wait? I am late to a meeting. Can you make mine next?”
Wait why are you even here then?
8. Barista: “What size?” Customer: “Can I get a grande?” Barista: “Huh?” Customer: “A grande.” Barista: "Small, medium or large?” Customer: “Grande.”
I don't speak Starbucks, sorry. I do know that tall means large, grande means large in S
9. "Can I get a .... IDK what I want."
Meanwhile, five other guests stand behind the customer, eager to order. If you have a few quick questions, that is totally fine, but if you just haven't made up your mind, don't hold others up.
10. Customer: *inaudible mumbling* Barista: "Sorry what was that?" Customer: *more inaudible mumbling*
11. Customer: "Can I get a small white mocha with skim milk, less chocolate, light whip, keep the toppings, an extra shot of espresso in a large cup with a shot of mint, half-caf with foam, no lid, and extra chips on top."
When said at rapid speed don't expect your barista to remember it all, if it has a lot of specifications.
Baristas are usually very willing to explain things that you may not know about coffee and are always willing to help you find a drink that you enjoy. All that is asked for in return is kindness and understanding, as things can be tough behind that counter. Don't worry, though, we'll give you another shot (again pun intended).
